NORFOLK, Va. -- #2 seed Hampden-Sydney College dropped a 5-0 decision to #1 seed and defending champion Washington and Lee University in the 2019 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Tournament Championship on Sunday at the Folkes-Stevens Indoor Tennis Center at Old Dominion University in Norfolk. The Tigers finished their season with a final record of 13-10 overall, while the Generals improved to 15-7 and earned the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
W&L took a 3-0 advantage in the title match with a sweep in doubles, before earning the team victory with two wins in singles. The Generals have won 10-straight championships and 38 overall.
In doubles, junior brothers Matthew Moody/Raleigh, N.C. and Michael Moody/Raleigh, N.C. fell at No. 1, 4-8. Sophomore William Driskill/Middleburg and junior Grayson Burns/Waynesboro fell at No. 2, 5-8. Junior Clark Cummings/Norfolk and freshman Tyler Brice/Rocky Mount, N.C. fell at No. 3, 3-8.
In singles, Driskill fell at No. 3 by scores of 1-6, 0-6, and Burns fell at No. 4 by scores of 1-6, 2-6. Also playing in singles when the match ended were Matthew Moody at No. 1 (6-7 [4-7], 1-1), Michael Moody at No. 2 (3-6, 2-2) and Cummings at No. 5 (0-1). Brice had not started at No. 6.
H-SC completed its first campaign under the guidance of first-year head coach Byron Balkin, who led the program to 10 wins over their final 12 contests while making a second consecutive appearance in the ODAC Tournament finale. The Tigers were 10-1 against ODAC competition this spring, and have no seniors among the nine-member team roster.
