Hampden-Sydney Picked 3rd In ODAC Men's Tennis Preseason Coaches' Poll

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College has been picked to finish third in the 2019 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Men's Tennis Preseason Coaches' Poll.  The Tigers, who finished 16-6 overall and 8-2 in the ODAC for third-place during the regular season last year, garnered 101 points for third among the 12 schools.  The Tigers advanced to the ODAC Tournament Championship a year ago.

Defending regular season and tournament winner Washington and Lee University was picked first with 121 points, ahead of Guilford College (107) and H-SC.  The Generals received 11 first-place votes, while Guilford got the other first-place vote.  Virginia Wesleyan University (90, fourth) and Bridgewater College (83, fifth) round out the top five after the Tigers.

Hampden-Sydney returns seven lettermen, including five of the top six in singles and doubles.  The Tigers are led this spring by the junior duo of twins Matthew Moody and Michael Moody of Raleigh, North Carolina.  They were named All-ODAC First Team at #1 doubles a year ago, while Matthew was All-ODAC Second Team at #1 singles.  Junior Grayson Burns/Waynesboro was All-ODAC First Team at #6 singles, while he and classmate Clark Cummings/Norfolk were All-ODAC First Team at #3 doubles.  Sophomore William Driskill/Middleburg was All-ODAC Second Team at #2 doubles.

Matthew Moody posted a singles record of 18-7 overall, 8-2 in the ODAC, while 22-4 overall in doubles, 9-1 in the ODAC.  Michael Moody had a singles record of 14-11 overall, 8-2 in the ODAC, while also 22-4 overall in doubles, 9-1 in the ODAC.  Burns had a singles record of 17-4 overall, 7-1 in the ODAC, while 16-8 overall in doubles, 6-2 in the ODAC.  Cummings had a singles record of 20-4 overall, 9-1 in the ODAC, while 18-9 overall in doubles, 6-3 in the ODAC.  Driskill had a singles record of 7-18 overall, 3-7 in the ODAC, while 17-11 overall in doubles, 7-3 in the ODAC.

Also returning are sophomores Andrew Donelson/McLean and Zander Theoharis/Vero Beach, Fla.  Donelson had a singles record of 1-3 overall, 0-1 in the ODAC, while 4-2 overall in doubles, 1-0 in the ODAC.  Theoharis did not play in singles, while 1-0 overall in doubles.  New to the team this year are freshmen Tyler Brice/Rocky Mount, N.C. and Alex Zorko/Heusenstamm, Germany.

Hampden-Sydney, coached by first-year head coach Byron Balkin, dropped a season-opening 7-2 non-conference decision on the road at No. 15 North Carolina Wesleyan College on February 2 in Rocky Mount, North Carolina.  The Tigers will play NCAA Division I Norfolk State University on Saturday, Feb. 9, at 6 p.m. at Princess Anne Country Club in Virginia Beach.
