Tennis Picked Third in ODAC Preseason Poll

Tennis squad

Hampden-Sydney Tennis received one first-place vote and was picked third in the ODAC Preseason Poll.

Last year's tennis squad was one of the most improved teams in the nation as the Tigers won ten more games than the previous season. H-SC finished in a tie for fourth place and would defeat Randolph-Macon in the ODAC Tournament First Round, marking the Tigers first appearance in the tournament since 2014 and the Tigers best placement in the ODAC standings since 2011.

"After last year's success, we've got a target on our back," stated Head Coach Robert Bareford. "We showed we were one of the top teams in the conference, and now we're even stronger this year. I'm looking forward to proving it this season as we compete for an ODAC title."

H-SC returns five of their top six from 2017. Team captains Matthew Moody and Michael Moody stepped in as the #1 and #2 singles competitors while also forming the top doubles team in the ODAC. Matthew went 13-5 in solo competition while Michal posted a 13-3 mark en route to earning First-Team All-ODAC honors. The duo was named First-Team All-ODAC and posted a perfect 10-0 mark in ODAC play during the regular season. Overall, they went 16-2, with their two losses coming against D1 opponent Longwood and vs. Washington and Lee in the ODAC Tournament.

Clark Cummings, also a team captain, is back after playing #4 singles and #2 doubles in 2017. He went 6-6 at the #4 singles flight and 9-4 at #2 doubles. Levy Young returns to the court as well. He registered an 8-6 mark at #5 singles and 10-8 overall. He additionally posted a 7-7 doubles record, splitting time at the #2 and #3 spots.
