(November 1, 2008)HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA – It only took a minute and a half for the Tigers to send their message that they are fighting for a championship. Just over a minute into the game senior Jason Powell (Marietta, GA/Pope) scored what would be the game winning goal of the ODAC quarterfinal match. Powell was able to find the net due to a great pass from junior Will Robertson (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Catholic).
With the lead, Hampden-Sydney did not let up firing seven more shots in the half, though General keeper Ben Bartlett was able to stop the two shots that he faced.
Though the Tigers held onto the lead, it was never an easy battle. The Generals continued to fight trying to create open looks. Fortunately for the Tigers, sophomores Matt Swaney (Potomac Falls, VA/Potomac Falls) and Sam Turner (Richmond, VA/Benedictine) were there every time to limit Washington & Lee's shots.
Hampden-Sydney did see a potential tying goal just minutes into the second half off of a John Lindsay header, but sophomore keeper John Robert Plyler (Charlotte, NC/Myers Park) made a huge save, jumping up and knocking the ball just over the goal. Plyler would make another game saving grab off of a Stiles Harper shot just feet from the goal.
The Tigers would also get good looks of their own as freshman Bryan Hughes (Midlothian, VA/Cosby) had another solid, feisty game firing off three shots.
With the win the Tigers improve to 12-5-1 and advance to the ODAC Semifinals. Hampden-Sydney will get set to take the road as they will face the one seeded Maroons of Roanoke College in Salem, VA on Wednesday the 5th. Time is to be determined.
