Hampden-Sydney Lacrosse Defeats Randolph-Macon 14-11

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Sophomore Jared Medwar/Apex, N.C. scored a career-high seven goals, adding one assist, to lead Hampden-Sydney College to a 14-11 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's lacrosse victory past arch-rival Randolph-Macon Collegeon Saturday at Fulton Field at Lewis C. Everett Stadium.  Senior captain John Burke/Richmond added a career-high seven assists, while sophomore Jake O'Brien/Scituate, Mass. added three goals and one assist for the host Tigers (9-3, 4-1), who led 9-3 at halftime against the visiting Yellow Jackets (9-3, 3-2).

H-SC and R-MC battled to a 2-2 tie through one quarter before a large crowd on Senior Day and the final day of Greek Week on campus. Scoring early goals for the Tigers were Medwar (7g, 1a) at 4:52 and O'Brien (3g, 1a) at 2:17.  Medwar scored unassisted, while Burke (7a) notched the first of his seven assists on the goal by O'Brien.

H-SC outscored the Yellow Jackets 7-1 during the second quarter to lead 9-3 at the intermission.  Goals were scored by junior Jack Hayden/Apex, N.C. (2g) at 13:51, Medwar with three consecutive tallies at 12:41, 10:52 and 10:31, freshman Bobby Clagett/Brandywine, Md. (1g) at 8:36, sophomore Jake Brummett/Glen Rock, Pa. (1g) at 8:29 and Medwar with his fourth goal of the period at 2:44.  Helping on the scores with assists were O'Brien at 13:51, Burke at 12:41, 10:31 and 8:36, along with sophomore Reilly French/Frederick, Md. (1a) at 2:44.  Medwar and Brummett each had unassisted goals among the scoring, as well.

R-MC fought back with a 5-2 edge in the third quarter, as the hosts led 11-8 after three quarters of action.  Scoring in the period were Medwar at 10:48 and O'Brien at 3:13, assisted by Burke and Medwar, respectively.

H-SC and the Yellow Jackets each scored three goals in the final quarter to provide for the final margin.  The Tigers got goals from Hayden at 11:58, O'Brien at 7:01 and Medwar at 6:57.  Burke had assists on the first and third goals, while O'Brien tallied unassisted.

Junior captain and goalkeeper Nick Arcuri/Apex, N.C. started and played the entire 60 minutes, yielding the 11 goals while making 18 saves.

Brummett was 15-27 on face-offs, and collected 10 ground balls.  Senior Anton Kheirani/Alexandria added five ground balls, while classmate John Kline/New Cumberland, Pa. and freshman Grayson Ackaway/Virginia Beach each had two caused turnovers.

It was Senior Day for John BurkeSeamus Byrne/Charlotte, N.C.Mikell Hay/Charleston, S.C.Anton KheiraniJohn KlineJack Scheer/Lakeville, Minn. and Nick Steen/Purcellville.  The seven were recognized for their respective collegiate careers during a special pre-game ceremony at midfield.
