Hampden-Sydney Lacrosse Runs Past Guilford (N.C.) 23-14

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Sophomore Jake O'Brien/Scituate, Mass. had three goals and four assists, senior captain John Burke/Richmond had four goals, and junior Jack Hayden/Apex, N.C. had two goals and two assists, to lead Hampden-Sydney College to a 23-14 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's lacrosse victory past Guilford (N.C.) College on Saturday at Fulton Field at Lewis C. Everett Stadium.  Sophomore Jared Medwar/Apex, N.C. added two goals and one assist for the host Tigers (7-3, 2-1), who led 12-5 at halftime against the visiting Quakers (5-6, 0-5).

H-SC took a 6-2 lead through one quarter, getting goals from O'Brien (3g, 4a) at 12:48, freshman Sean Duffy/Ambler, Pa. (1g, 1a) at 10:08, O'Brien at 9:22, sophomore Charlie Doetzer/Holly Springs, N.C. (2g) at 7:27, Medwar (2g, 1a) at 4:15 and Hayden (2g, 2a) at 2:06.  Providing assists during the opening quarter were sophomore Reilly French/Frederick, Md. (2a) at 9:22, Hayden at 7:27 and 4:15, and O'Brien at 2:06.

The Tigers outscored GC 6-3 in the second quarter to lead 12-5 at the intermission.  Scoring goals were sophomore Davis Hatch/Mechanicsville (1g) at 12:28, Burke (4g) at 6:49, 6:06, 1:54 and :14, and Medwar at 2:47.  Assists went to O'Brien at 12:28 and 2:47, Reilly French at 6:49 and Duffy at :14.

H-SC took a 9-3 advantage in goals during the third quarter to take a commanding 21-8 lead through 45 minutes.  Scoring goals were Doetzer at 13:34, freshman Bobby Clagett/Brandywine, Md. (1g) at 13:09, O'Brien at 12:39, Hayden at 12:31, junior George Marshall/Round Hill (2g) at 11:16, freshman Aidan Byrne/Charlotte (1g) at 9:55, freshman Drane Garven/Concord, N.C. (1g) at 7:37, senior Seamus Byrne/Charlotte (1g, 1a) at 6:17 and freshman Brooks Waskey/Roanoke (1g) at 1:26, for his first collegiate goal.  Adding assists during the quarter were Medwar at 13:34, O'Brien at 13:09, freshman Max Koontz/Winston-Salem, N.C. (2a) at 12:31 and 11:16, Seamus Byrne at 9:55 to his younger brother (Aidan) and freshman Marshall Flagg/Williamsburg (1a) at 6:17.

The Quakers managed to outscore the Tigers 6-2 in the fourth quarter to provide for H-SC's final nine-goal margin of victory. Scoring for the hosts in the final quarter were Marshall at 11:28 and freshman Billy French/Cumberland (1g) at 11:02.  Both goals were unassisted.

Junior captain and goalkeeper Nick Arcuri/Apex, N.C. started and played the first 35:51, yielding six goals while making six saves.  Sophomore keeper William Schlager/Washington, D.C. played the next 9:09, allowing two goals with two saves.  Senior keeper Nick Steen/Purcellville played the final 15:00, allowing six goals with two saves.

Sophomore Jake Brummett/Glen Rock, Pa. was 15-20 on face-offs, and collected eight ground balls. Freshman Presley Miller/Annapolis, Md. was 6-8 on face-offs, and sophomore Michael Thornton/Farmville was 4-6 on face-offs.  Senior Anton Kheirani/Alexandria added six ground balls.

H-SC is scheduled to play again on the road at ODAC opponent Virginia Wesleyan University on Wednesday, April 3, at 7 p.m. in Virginia Beach.
