BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College's B Golf Team posted a first-round score of 321 on Monday to stand 14th among 17 teams at the VSGA Intercollegiate being played at the Blacksburg Country Club in Blacksburg. Junior Varun Yerramsetti/Birmingham, Ala. and sophomore Sam McNamara/Charlottesville are leading the Tigers with their respective day one scores of 79, each tied for 45th individually among the 93 golfers.
Yerramsetti posted one birdie and 11 pars, while McNamara had three birdies and eight pars during his opening round at the par 72, 6,619-yard layout. They are being followed by senior John David Gooden/Myrtle Beach, S.C. (80, T-56th), sophomore Jimmy Hill/Mechanicsville (83, T-71st) and freshman Trevor Elliott/Richmond (85, T-79th). Gooden had two birdies and eight pars, Hill added one birdie and eight pars, and Elliott contributed seven pars on the day.
The University of Lynchburg is leading the event with its six-under par 282, while Harry Hodgert of the Hornets and Elias Haavisto of Averett University are the individual co-leaders at five-under 67. The event features most of the state's Division II and III schools as well as The Apprentice School. Lynchburg is followed by Averett (290), Christopher Newport (293) Mary Washington (295) and Virginia Union (296) among the top five.
H-SC will continue and complete its competition in the two-day, 36-hole tournament on Tuesday.
