GLEN ALLEN, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College's B Golf Team posted a score of 307 on Sunday for a 36-hole score of 616 (309-307) to finish fifth among 12 teams at the Ted Keller Memorial Tournament at the Dominion Golf Club in Glen Allen. Freshman Alex Rubino/Charlotte, N.C. fired a one-under par 71 in the final round for a two-day score of 146 (75-71) to lead the Tigers and tie for first individually among the 63 golfers for his second tournament win in five days.
Rubino posted three birdies, including a 30-foot putt on the 18th hole to force a playoff for medalist, adding 13 pars on the par 72, 6,870-yard layout. He and Ahmad Reedus of NCAA Division II Virginia Union University each finished at 146 and went to a playoff on the ninth hole (par 3, 171 yards). Both golfers had pars the first time through in the playoff; however, Reedus earned tournament medalist honors with a par the second time playing the same hole, while Rubino bogeyed it.
Rubino, who won the Tom Kinder Memorial Tournament on September 16-17, led the Keller field in pars (27), tied for second in par 3 scoring (3.00) and par 5 scoring (4.75), tied for eighth in par 4 scoring (4.20) and tied for 17th in birdies (4).
Rubino was followed by sophomore Sam McNamara/Charlottesville (77-79--156, T-20th), junior Varun Yerramsetti/Birmingham, Ala. (79-78--157, T-23rd) and freshman Trevor Elliott/Richmond (78-79--157, T-23rd), along with sophomore Keith Marks/Midlothian (82-81--163, T-37th). Sophomore Jimmy Hill/Mechanicsville played as an individual and posted 79-74--153 to tie for 13th.
The Tigers led the tourney field in par 3 scoring (3.25), tied for first in eagles (1), was third in birdies (20), tied for fourth in par 4 scoring (4.41), and was sixth in pars (97) and par 5 scoring (5.20). Marks led the field in par 3 scoring (2.88) and tied for 15th in par 5 scoring (5.00). McNamara tied for first in eagles (1), tied for eighth in birdies (5), tied for 12th in par 4 scoring (4.25) and tied for 15th in par 5 scoring (5.00). Hill tied for first in birdies (7), tied for fourth in par 4 scoring (4.10) and tied for fifth in par 3 scoring (3.13). Elliott tied for fifth in par 3 scoring (3.13), tied for sixth in par 4 scoring (4.15) and tied for 17th in birdies (4). Yerramsetti tied for 13th in pars (21), tied for 17th in birdies (4) and tied for 18th in par 3 scoring (3.38).
Host Randolph-Macon College won the event with its 604, followed by Franklin & Marshall (Pa.) College (605), the University of Mary Washington (610), Virginia Union (611) and H-SC B (616) among the top five teams.
H-SC's B Team will compete again at the 36-hole Virginia State Golf Association Intercollegiate on October 14-15 at The Blacksburg Country Club in Blacksburg.
