HARRISONBURG, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College's B Golf Team posted a score of 296 on Tuesday for a 36-hole score of 591 (295-296) to finish third among 17 teams at the Tom Kinder Memorial Tournament played at the Lakeview Golf Club in Harrisonburg. Freshman Alex Rubino/Charlotte, N.C. fired a four-under par 68 in the final round for a two-day score of 140 (72-68) to lead the Tigers and earn individual tournament medalist honors among 88 golfers.
Playing the Mountain/Lake course, a par 72, 6,606-yard layout, Rubino posted one eagle, three birdies and 13 pars toward his 68 to earn first place in just his second collegiate tournament. He led the field in pars (29), was second in par 4 scoring (3.90), tied for third in eagles (1), tied for 11th in par 5 scoring (4.63) and tied for 14th in par 3 scoring (3.13).
Rubino was followed by sophomore Sam McNamara/Charlottesville (74-70--144, T-7), who also earned a Top 10 finish, junior Varun Yerramsetti/Birmingham, Ala. (73-79--152, T-35), freshman Trevor Elliott/Richmond (76-79--155, T-45) and senior John David Gooden/Myrtle Beach, S.C. (82-81--163, T-71).
The Tigers led the tourney field in birdies (29) and were second in par 3 scoring (3.10), tied for third in eagles (2), fourth in par 4 scoring (4.27), ninth in pars (102) and 12th in par 5 scoring (5.08). McNamara led the field in birdies (11), tied for first in par 3 scoring (2.63), tied for third in eagles (1) and tied for 12th in par 4 scoring (4.20). Yerramsetti tied for fifth in par 4 scoring (4.05), tied for 13th in birdies (6) and tied for 18th in pars (22).
McDaniel (Md.) College won the event with its 584, followed by Bridgewater College (589), H-SC B (591), Stevenson (Md.) University (593) and the University of Lynchburg (593) among the top five teams.
H-SC's B Team will compete again at the 36-hole Ted Keller Memorial Tournament on September 21-22 at The Dominion Club in Glen Allen.
