Tiger Golf Ties for Fourth at Pine Needles


SOUTHERN PINES, NC-The Hampden-Sydney golf team started its spring season with a fourth place finish in the Pine Needles Intercollegiate in Southern Pines, North Carolina. The event was scheduled for two days but was cut short to one round due to rain.

The Tigers tied LaGrange for fourth with a team total of 312. Guilford College won the event with a 291, and Washington & Lee (296) and Cape Fear Community College (299) rounded out the top three.

Junior Rick O'Connell (Goochland, VA/Goochland) paced the Tigers while finishing ninth overall on a 75.

Sophomore George Whiting (Charlotte, NC/Myers Park) was three strokes behind O'Connell as his 78 placed him tied for 18th. Just one stroke behind, tied for 22nd, was sophomore Drew Arnold (Chatham, VA/Chatham).

Sophomore Trey Cully (Studley, VA/Hanover) tied for 24th place while shooting an 80, and freshman Trent Tuttle (Diamondale, MI/Holt) rounded out the group, shooting an 83 for 35th place.

Washington & Lee's Teddy Corcoran won medalist honors while shooting two under par at 69.

The Tigers return to action March 11 in the Taylor Made-ADIDAS Intercollegiate in Dataw Island, SC.
