Golf Wins Hampden-Sydney Invitational


FARMVILLE, VA-The Hampden-Sydney golf team took home first place in the 2012 Hampden-Sydney Invitational at the Manor. The Tigers saw two players place in the top five individually, with Rick O'Connell (Goochland, VA/Goochland) shooting a 74 and 75 (+5) to finish second, Drew Arnold (Chatham, VA/Chatham) shooting 75 and 75 (+6) for fourth, and George Whiting (Charlotte, NC/Myers Park) shooting a pair of 76's (+8) to round out the top five.

Bridgewater, behind medalist Scott Wakely, finished second with a score of 638, and Ferrum rounded out the top three with a 650.

Trey Cully (Studley, VA/Hanover) finished eighth overall at 15 over (79, 80), and Sean Gatz (Newport News, VA/Menchville) finished out the A-team tied for 29th overall with scores of 82 and 86.

The Hampden-Sydney B-team finished fifth overall and was led by rookies Thomas Cole (79, 77, +6) and Trent Tuttle (78, 82, +16), who finished sixth and ninth, respectively. Drew Smith (Warrenton, VA/Fauquier) tied for 24th with scores of 82 and 83, and Forrest Wilson (Alexandria, VA/Potomac) finished 42nd with rounds of 83 and 90. Brian Hickey (Purcellville, VA/Loudoun Valley) rounded out the B-team as his 87 and 94 were good enough for 49th.

Two Tigers played as individuals with Page Smith tying for 32nd (82, 87) and Brett Shaw finishing 47th (90, 87).

Hampden-Sydney will return to action in the Virginia State Tournament in Danville. The tournament will be played from the 29th to the 30th.
