Hampden-Sydney Falls At Randolph 73-59

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Sophomore Jake Hahn/Ruckersville and freshman Warren Zager/Nashville, Tenn. each scored 11 points, but Hampden-Sydney College dropped a 73-59 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball decision on the road at Randolph College on Wednesday night in Lynchburg.  Sammy Hooper scored a game-high 25 points for the host Wildcats (7-10, 2-6 ODAC) against the visiting Tigers (4-10, 1-6 ODAC).

H-SC scored the first five points of the contest to lead 5-0 at 18:50 after an opening three-point field goal by junior Chaise Johnson/Richmond and a jumper from sophomore Brendan McHale/Charleston, S.C.  RC answered with nine-straight points to lead 9-5 at 15:37, but the Tigers responded with a 6-2 run to tie it at 11-11 with 11:07 on the first-half clock, getting baskets from senior captain Justin Reid/Cary, N.C., junior Kevin Quinn/Durham, N.C. and freshman Morgan McKay/Banner Elk, N.C.  The Wildcats led 22-19 at 4:10 before H-SC used another quick 6-2 run to lead 25-24 at 3:04, getting points from Hahn, Zager and sophomore Drew Scott/Franklin, Tenn.  The hosts closed the half with four of the final six points to lead 28-27 at the intermission.

Randolph used a 13-3 run to start the second half for a 41-30 advantage with 15:25 remaining, and the lead was 51-38 at 10:27, as the Wildcats got 12 quick second-half points from Hooper.  H-SC closed to within 53-45 at 8:48 after a three-pointer by freshman Cole Atwood/Mount Olive, N.C.  RC, however, took control with a 13-2 run to lead 66-47 with just 4:34 left on the clock -- getting seven more points from Hooper.  The Tigers scored six-straight points via back-to-back conventional three-point plays by Hahn and Reid to close within 66-53 at 3:35, but could get no closer toward the final margin.

Hahn and Zager led H-SC with their respective 11 points each, with Zager adding a game-high eight rebounds and Hahn adding five rebounds – his totals coming off the bench.  Johnson, Quinn and Reid each finished with seven points for the Tigers.  H-SC shot 42% (25-59) from the field, including 31% (4-13) on three-pointers, and 83% (5-6) at the free throw line.

Hooper led Randolph with his game-high 25 points, including 19 in the second half, adding six rebounds and a game-high seven assists.  Justin Dula and Tremaine Pugh each finished with 10 points for the Wildcats.  RC shot 42% (28-66) from the field, including 27% (7-26) on three-pointers, and 71% (10-14) at the line.

H-SC will return home to host ODAC member Emory & Henry College at S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium on Saturday, Jan. 19, at 2 p.m., before playing on the road at ODAC opponent Ferrum College on Wednesday, Jan. 23, at 7 p.m.
