Tigers Picked Fourth in Preseason Poll

FOREST, VA-In what looks to be another competitive year in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, Hampden-Sydney basketball was recently picked to finish fourth in the ODAC Coaches' Preseason Poll while receiving one first place vote. Eastern Mennonite was tabbed as the team to beat with seven first place votes and 115 points. Randolph-Macon received the final three first place votes to go with 112 points for a second place prediction, and Virginia Wesleyan's 99 points rounded out the top four.

The conference has turned into a national power, with four teams in the NCAA Division III National Tournament and two in the Final Four. The Tigers, led by third year head coach Dee Vick, return six letter winners from the 2009-10 squad that finished 13-13 overall and 8-8 in the conference. Though Vick has the tough task of replacing six seniors from last season, including the three-time All-ODAC selection and program's fourth leading scorer Turner King, the coach has a talented bunch returning in 2010.

Returning for the Tigers this season will be senior Colin O'Neill (Fort Leavenworth, KS/Leavenworth) (6.2 points, 3.9 rebounds), junior Ben Jessee (Midlothian, VA/Cosby) (10.5 points, 2.6 assists), the reigning ODAC Rookie of the Year Harrison George (Raleigh, NC/Leesville) (14.0 points, 7.8 rebounds), sophomores Randall Ward (Richmond, VA/John Marshall) (5.4 points, 1.7 assists), Alex Potapov (Moscow, Russia/Florida Air) (4.7 points, 2.8 rebounds), Patrick Corrigan (Richmond, VA/Collegiate)(0.6 point, 0.6 rebounds) and redshirt freshman Fletcher Lumpkin (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin).

George became Hampden-Sydney basketball's first-ever Rookie of the Year, while he, Jessee and O'Neill were three of the team's top scorers last season. The Tigers were one of the most efficient scoring teams in the conference, placing third in free throw percentage (71.5%) and fourth in field goal shooting (46.2%).

The seven returners will be joined by a six man recruiting class that features two junior transfers and four freshmen. The 2010-11 Tigers kick their season off at home as they host the Roundball Club Tip-Off Tournament featuring Methodist, Ursinus and Medialle on November 19 and 20. Hampden-Sydney faces Methodist on November 19 at 7:00 pm.
