FERRUM, VA-Hampden-Sydney was 53.8% from the floor en route to an 87-83 road win over #19 Ferrum College. The hot shooting Tigers used a 42-28 cushion to improve to 13-8 on the season, while Ferrum falls to 19-3.
The Tigers got off to an early start, taking the quick 8-2 lead on a Ben Jessee (Midltohian, VA/Cosby) jumper at the 18:04 mark. Ferrum's Keith Crump cut it to a two point lead at 9-7 in favor of Hampden-Sydney, but back-to-back Ru White (Chesterfield, VA/L.C. Bird) buckets put the Tigers up 13-7.
Alex Potapov (Moscow, Russia/Florida Air) then knocked down two free throws to expand the lead to eight with 15:41 remaining in the half. Three minutes later, Colin O'Neill (Fort Leavenworth, KS/Leavenworth) pushed the lead to to 19-9.
The teams traded baskets for much of the remaining ten minutes of the half, but the Tigers were able to extend the lead even further as a Harrison George (Raleigh, NC/Leesville) bucket and free throw put the Tigers up 14 at 36-22.
After Ferrum cut into the lead, Hampden-Sydney reeled off the final six points to take a 42-28 lead into intermission.
O'Neill's first bucket of the second half put the Tigers up 16, but Ferrum chipped the lead down to 12, until Jessee burieda three to go back up 15. Ferrum continued to chip away, however and a Derek Mitchell lay up and foul made it an eight point game at 53-45.
At the 8:16 mark, Ferrum made it closer as J.T. Edwards hit a three to make it a six point game at 64-58. The Tigers then made a 9-4 run to go back up 11 with 5:36 to play.
Ferrum did not go away though, cutting the Tiger lead to four with just over two and a half minutes to play.
The Tigers closed out the game making 10 of 12 of their free throws to pull away with the win.
Hampden-Sydney had four players score in double figures and were led by White's 17. George notched another double-double with 16 points and ten rebounds. O'Neill also scored 16 points while Jessee added 14.
Ferrum was led by Derek Mitchell's 26 points and 14 rebounds.
Hampden-Sydney returns to action Saturday, February 12 as they host #6 Virginia Wesleyan. Tip off is set for 2:00 pm.
