HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College 19th-year head football coach Marty Favret recently announced the program's top award winners for the 2018 season. Headlining the honorees is senior quarterback and team captain Alec Cobb/Jamestown, N.C., named the Tigers' Team Most Valuable Player.
Cobb finished second in NCAA Division III and the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) with 3,340 passing yards (371.1), completing 285 of 426 attempts (66.9%) with 24 touchdowns. He ranked second in Division III completions per game (31.7), passing yards per game and total offense (368.7), 13th in completion percentage and 22nd in points responsible for per game (19.6). Cobb led the ODAC in completion percentage, while second in passing yards, completions and passing touchdowns. He passed for over 300 yards in eight of nine games and had at least two touchdowns in six games, adding five rushing touchdowns. Cobb passed for a season-high 519 yards and five touchdowns against Emory & Henry on September 29, 2018. Alec was named Second Team All-ODAC and Second Team VaSID College Division All-State.
The J. Stokeley Fulton Award for Scholarship, Leadership and Athletic Achievement went to senior cornerback and team captain Brian Gwaltney/Colonial Heights. Gwaltney was second on the team with 55.0 total tackles (6.1), including 44 solo stops and 11 assists, 2.0 tackles for loss (six yards), two pass break-ups, one fumble recovery, one interception and one blocked punt at Washington and Lee on November 3. He tied for eighth in ODAC solo tackles, while tied for 15th in the ODAC total tackles. Gwaltney had a season-high 13 tackles against Christopher Newport on Sept. 8, and contributed eight tackles, including the two tackles for loss against R-MC on Nov. 10. Brian is majoring in Economics and Business, attaining a 2.98 cumulative GPA, while serving in a team leadership role as a captain, as well.
Defensive MVP honors went to junior linebacker Griffin Davis/Charlottesville. Davis led the team with 77.0 total tackles (8.6), including 53 solo stops and 24 assists, 6.0 tackles for loss (11 yards), one sack (five yards), one forced fumble, two fumbles recovered and one interception (five yards). He ranked 30th in Division III in solo tackles, while ranking fourth in the ODAC. Davis had a season-high 13 tackles, including the tackle for loss against Randolph-Macon on Nov. 10, and contributed six tackles, including the forced fumble, one fumble recovery and the interception at Bridgewater on October 13. Griffin was named First Team All-ODAC and Second Team VaSID College Division All-State.
Offensive MVP honors went to junior wide receiver Major Morgan/Onancock. Morgan led the ODAC in receptions (81), receiving yards (1,143) and receiving yards per game (127.0), while second in receiving touchdowns (12). He led Division III in receiving yards per game, was fifth in receptions per game and 20th in receiving touchdowns. Morgan recorded season-highs of 13 receptions at Ferrum on Oct. 27, and 220 yards receiving and three touchdowns against Randolph-Macon on Nov. 10. Major was named The Touchdown Club of Richmond's Small College Wide Receiver of the Year, First Team All-ODAC, First Team VaSID College Division All-State and D3football.com Third Team All-South Region.
Rookie of the Year honors went to freshman running back Kaleb Smith/Rocky Mount. Smith was seventh in the ODAC with 602 yards rushing on 147 attempts (4.1) with seven touchdowns. He was second in the ODAC in receiving with 71 receptions for 661 yards (9.3), adding two touchdowns. Smith was fourth in the ODAC with 1,263 all-purpose yards (157.9, third in the ODAC). He finished sixth in Division III receptions per game and 22nd in all-purpose yards. Smith rushed for a season-best 214 yards on 30 attempts (7.1) and one touchdown during a 38-35 win against Guilford on Oct. 20, adding a season-best 12 receptions for 118 yards (9.8). Kaleb was named the ODAC Rookie of the Year and Third-Team All-ODAC, as well as the VaSID College Division Offensive Rookie of the Year.
H-SC finished 2018 with an overall record of 4-5, including 4-3 in the ODAC. The Tigers will open the 2019 campaign with a non-conference home game against Averett University on Saturday, Sept. 7, at 1 p.m. at Fulton Field at Lewis C. Everett Stadium during the College's Hall of Fame Weekend.
