Football Falls 33-14 to Averett in Season Opener

Major Morgan

DANVILLE, VA-The Hampden-Sydney Football Tigers fell 33-14 on Sunday afternoon to Averett in the 2018 season opener. The action started out back and forth, but the Cougars managed 20 unanswered points that began with a 100-yard kickoff return in the second quarter to clinch the victory. The Tigers stand at 0-1 on the young season while Averett begins its year at 1-0.

Hampden-Sydney was first to strike, as Alec Cobb (Jamestown, NC/Ragsdale) rushed in for a one-yard score on the opening drive of the game, capping off a 12-play, 75-yard stretch.

Averett fired right back, scoring on the ensuing drive but failed to convert the extra point, making it a 7-6 lead for the Tigers midway through the first quarter.

Averett then took its first lead of the game, capitalizing on a Hampden-Sydney fumble, and finding the endzone three plays later for a 12-7 lead.

It looked like Averett was going to extend its lead, but the Tiger defense forced a fumble right in front of the goal line to prevent the score and get the ball back. Cobb then led the offense 75 yards and hit Major Morgan (Onancock, VA/Broadwater Academy) for a five yard touchdown and a 14-12 lead.

The lead, however, was short lived as Averett returned the Tigers' kickoff for a touchdown and a 19-14 lead midway through the second quarter.

Averett extended its lead before the end of the half, scoring a 49-yard touchdown to take a 26-12 lead into intermission.

Defenses took control in the second half as neither team had success finding the endzone. Averett scored the only touchdown of the half, using a 41-yard interception return to up its lead to 33-14.

Offensively, the Tigers had 400 yards on 356 passing and 44 rushing. Cobb went 33-of-53 for 330 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. Clay Vick (Raleigh, NC/Leesville Road) went 3-of-4 for 26 yards and an interception. Morgan led all receivers with ten catches for 153 yards and a touchdown. Kaleb Smith (Rocky Mount, VA/Franklin County) caught eight passes for 93 yards to go with 13 carries for 49 yards.

Nick Kallivokas (Purcellville, VA/Loudoun Valley) and Ed Newman (Farmville, VA/Fuqua) combined for six catches and 58 yards.

Defensively, the Tigers allowed 471 yards of offense on 306 yards rushing and 165 yards passing. Ryan Mallory (Mechanicsville, VA/Hanover) led the unit with 11 total tackles, while Riggs Jordan (Spencer, VA/Hargrave) and Griffin Davis (Charlottesville, VA/Monticello) had nine and eight stops, respectively.

The Tigers will open their home schedule on Saturday, September 8 as they will host the Captains of Christopher Newport University at Lewis C. Everett Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
