ROCKY MOUNT, VA-The Hampden-Sydney football team improved to 2-1 on the season and did so in dramatic fashion, defeating Ferrum College 55-24 at Franklin County High School. Junior quarterback Edgar Moore (Tallahassee, FL/Maclay School) threw for five touchdowns with no turnovers in the effort. Kyree Koonce (Charlottesville, VA/Monticello) and Cam Johnson (Dillwyn, VA/Buckingham) combined for five scores. Hampden-Sydney now enters its bye week before beginning conference play next month.

The Tigers got off to the races early and never looked back, scoring on their first drive in just three plays and 34 seconds. After two runs, Moore and Johnson connected for the first time on a 30-yard connection.

Ferrum responded on its next drive, marching 65 yards down the field, but the Tiger defense held the Panthers to a 26-yard field goal.

The teams traded punts, and then Moore and Johnson connected again, this time for a 75-yard strike as Johnson eluded a defender and sprinted down field.

Ferrum's Troy Helton matched the big play with a 65-yard run to make it a 13-10 game at the end of the first quarter.

The big plays continued into the second quarter with Koonce running for a 53-yard touchdown on the first play of the second quarter.

Following a Panther three-and-out, the Tigers upped their lead to 27-10 with Austin Perryman (Fairfax, VA/Fairfax) getting in the scoring action, catching a 17-yard pass from Moore.

On the ensuing drive, the defense forced its first of its three turnovers of the day with Tyler Martin (Evington, VA/Brookville) recovering a fumble on second down.

Two drives later, Koonce hit the goal line for the second time on a 23-yard run to go up 34-10 with just under four minutes to play in the half.

Ferrum, however, was able to cut into the lead before intermission, scoring on a Chris Guy 16-yard touchdown reception.

The Tigers continued to roll in the second half, taking just 79 seconds to go up 41-17. On a second and ten at midfield, Koonce caught a screen from Moore and took it 53 yards to the end zone.

The defense forced another three and out, and the offense used the momentum to get Michael Mey (Glen Allen, VA/VMI) in the end zone on a 14-yard reception.

Each team added one score in the fourth with Helton rushing in from a yard out for the Panthers and Mike DeMasi (Virginia Beach, VA/Frank W. Cox) capped off a 63 yard drive for the Tigers with a nine-yard touchdown run.

On the day, the Tigers tallied 528 yards of offense with 315 passing and 213 rushing. Moore was 15-of-26 for 268 yards and five touchdowns. Koonce had 175 yards of offense behind 124 rushing yards and two touchdowns on ten carries and 51 receiving yards and a touchdown on two receptions.

Mey had four catches for 58 yards and a touchdown, while Johnson recorded 105 yards and a score on two receptions. Perryman had three catches for 25 yards and a score.

Defensively, Larry Haskins (Buckingham, VA/Fuqua) recorded a game-high 11 tackles, while Tyler Martin and Ryan Mallory (Mechanicsville, VA/Hanover) recorded six and five stops, respectively. Tyler Martin also had 2.0 tackles-for-loss and a fumble recovery.

As a unit, the Tigers had eight stops in the backfield for a total loss of 20 yards. They also recovered three fumbles.

The Tigers will be off next Saturday but will return to action Saturday, October 3 as they host the Cardinals of the Catholic University of America. Kickoff is set for 1:00 PM.
