Tigers to Face North Carolina Wesleyan

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA-After a convincing 63-9 win over Averett University in the 2011 season opener, the Hampden-Sydney Tigers will continue their three game stint against the USA South with a road game against North Carolina Wesleyan. The two teams have met three times, with Hampden-Sydney winning all three, including their last meeting in Rocky Mount - a 33-23 decision in 2008.

Last season, the Tigers held on to a 21-19 win over the Battling Bishops at Everett Stadium. Kirk Rohle (Mechanicsville, VA/Hanover) accounted for 144 yards of offense, while receivers Kyle Vance (Onley, VA/Broadwater Academy) and Sean Cavanagh (Midlothian, VA/Clover Hill) combined for 12 receptions, 154 yards and two touchdowns.

On the flip side, North Carolina Wesleyan's defense picked off five passes, and offensively, the Bishops were led by Jordan Vann's 238 passing yards. Vann also had a team-high 47 rushing yards and a touchdown.

In week one of 2011, the Tigers - behind 273 passing yards and three touchdowns from Travis Lane (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) and 183 yards and two scores from Rohle - recorded an impressive 63-9 win over Averett. The 63 point output was the fourth time head coach Marty Favret has scored 60-plus, and first time since the Tigers' 66-27 win over Dickinson in 2005.

The Bishops were not as fortunate in their season opener, falling 38-20 on the road to 14th-ranked Ohio Northern. Sophomore play caller John Jackson threw for 197 yards but was stifled by two pick-sixes from the Polar Bear defense. Senior place kicker Kevin Quicker was named the USA South Special Teams Player of the Week after connecting on field goals of 41 and 42 yards.

The Tigers and Bishops are set to kick off at the Northern Nash Football Complex on Saturday September, 10 at 1:00 pm.
