Hampden-Sydney Places Five On 2019 All-ODAC Baseball Teams | Chase Counts & Matthew Spagnolo Each First Team

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College placed five student-athletes on the 2019 All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference Baseball Teams, including juniors Chase Counts/Virginia Beach and Matthew Spagnolo/Glen Allen as First Team All-ODAC selections, senior Tyler Blevins/Draper and junior Jacob Bartlett/Chesterfield as Second Team All-ODAC choices, along with junior Chase Mayberry/Appomattox as a Third Team All-ODAC honoree.

Counts, a second baseman, started all 38 games this season, batting .367 (58-158) with seven home runs, two triples, eight doubles, 43 runs, 29 RBIs, 10 walks and two stolen bases.  He had a .576 slugging percentage, a .401 on-base percentage and a .950 fielding percentage with 61 putouts and 91 assists in 160 total chances in the infield.  Counts led the Tigers in at-bats, hits, runs, home runs and slugging percentage, was tied for second in triples and fourth in doubles.  Chase is second in the ODAC in runs, tied for fourth in hits, tied for fifth in home runs, sixth in at-bats and slugging percentage, ninth in batting average and tied for 14th in RBIs.

Spagnolo, a designated hitter and team captain, started 31 of 33 games, batting .385 (47-122) with two home runs, one triple, 13 doubles, 21 runs, 24 RBIs, 11 walks and three stolen bases.  He had a .557 slugging percentage, a .446 on-base percentage and a .955 fielding percentage with 41 putouts and one assist in 44 chances in the outfield.  Spagnolo led the team in doubles, was second in hits, slugging percentage and on-base percentage, tied for fourth in triples, while fifth in at-bats and home runs.  Matt is fourth in the ODAC in batting average, tied for eighth in doubles, 10th in slugging percentage, 11th in on-base percentage and tied for 23rd in hits.

Blevins, a first baseman and team captain, as well, started all 38 games, as well, batting .341 (45-132) with three home runs, two triples, 10 doubles, 39 runs, 22 RBIs, 32 walks and one stolen base.  He had a .515 slugging percentage, a .486 on-base percentage and a .986 fielding percentage with 332 putouts and 14 assists in 351 chances.  Blevins led the team in on-base percentage, was second in runs and walks, tied for second in home runs and triples, third in at-bats, hits, doubles and slugging percentage, and fourth in batting average.  Tyler is second in the ODAC in walks, fourth in runs, fifth in on-base percentage, 15th in slugging percentage, tied for 15th in home runs, tied for 21st in batting average and tied for 22nd in doubles.

Bartlett, an outfielder, started 30 of 31 games, batting .351 (39-111) with three triples, seven doubles, 18 runs, 25 RBIs, three walks and five stolen bases.  He had a .468 slugging percentage, a .431 on-base percentage and a .967 fielding percentage with 56 putouts and two assists in 60 chances.  Bartlett led the team in triples and stolen bases, was third in batting average, fourth in RBIs, slugging percentage and on-base percentage, and fifth in hits and doubles.  Jacob is tied for fifth in the ODAC in triples, 15th in batting average, 19th in on-base percentage and 25th in slugging percentage.

Mayberry, a right-handed pitcher, made 15 appearances this season with 12 starts and two complete games.  He was 4-4 on the mound with a 3.64 earned run average over 84.1 innings with 71 strikeouts (7.60).  Mayberry added one save, yielded just one home run in 334 opponent at-bats and had a .960 fielding percentage with two putouts and 22 assists in 25 chances.  He led the team in starts, innings and strikeouts, tied for first in wins, saves and complete games, was second in ERA and tied for second in appearances.  Chase leads the ODAC in innings, is tied for second in starts, tied for third in complete games, ninth in ERA, 10th in K/9, tied for 10th in wins, tied for 14th in appearances and tied for 17th in saves.
