Hampden-Sydney Baseball Wins At Averett 12-4

DANVILLE, Va. -- Junior Matthew Spagnolo/Glen Allen and freshman Mark Evans/Yorktown each had three hits to lead Hampden-Sydney College to a 12-4 non-conference road win at Averett University on Monday at Owen-Fulton Field in Danville.  Senior Trent Jacobs/Farmville gained the pitching victory in middle relief for the visiting Tigers (2-1).

H-SC had 12 runs on 17 hits … scoring one run in the first inning, six runs in the sixth, two runs in the seventh, one run in the eighth and two more runs in the ninth for the victory.  The Tigers trailed 3-1 through five innings before scoring 11 runs over the final four frames.

Junior Jonathan Triesler/Chesterfield (2-5, 2 RBIs) got things started in the first with an RBI single that scored Evans (3-4, 2B), who had reached on a fielding error.

The Tigers took control with the six-run sixth.  Senior Tyler Blevins/Draper (2-4, 3B, 2B, RBI) had an RBI double that plated junior Andrew Kasiski/Chesapeake (0-3, RBI), who had reached on another fielding error.  Blevins crossed the plate via a run-scoring single by Spagnolo (3-4, 2B, 2 RBIs), and Spagnolo scored on an RBI double from junior Chase Counts/Virginia Beach (2-5, 3B, 2B, RBI).  Counts crossed the plate when classmate Jacob Bartlett/Chesterfield (0-3, RBI) reached on yet another fielding miscue, and both Bartlett and Evans scored courtesy of a two-run double by junior Sam Feliciano/Bristow (2-3, 2B, 2 RBIs).

In the seventh, sophomore Ryan Clawson/Moseley (1-4, RBI) added an RBI single that scored Blevins, who had tripled, and Spagnolo contributed a run-scoring double that plated Clawson.  In the eighth, Kasiski added a sacrifice fly RBI that scored Feliciano, who had singled.  In the ninth, junior Josh Duimstra/Glen Allen (1-2, 2B, RBI) had an RBI double that scored Counts, who had tripled, and Duimstra crossed the plate on a run-scoring single by Triesler.

Jacobs (1-0) pitched the fifth (1.0) inning for the win in middle relief, yielding one hit and two runs, both earned, with no strikeouts and one walk.  Freshman Trenton Tiller/Powhatan started and tossed the first 3.0 scoreless innings, scattering two hits with five strikeouts and one walk.  Classmate Kieran Conway/Chesapeake pitched the fourth (1.0) inning, allowing one hit and one run, earned, with one strikeout and two walks.  Junior Cameron Meyers/Benson, N.C. tossed 2.0 scoreless innings, yielding no hits with three strikeouts and two walks.  Triesler pitched the final 2.0 innings, allowing one hit and one run, earned, with six strikeouts and one walk.

H-SC will return home to host the Ty Cobb Classic on February 22-24, playing its home opener against Southern Virginia University on Saturday, Feb. 23, at 3 p.m. at Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark - Wurdeman Stadium.
