Baseball Falls 15-11 to Frostburg State

FROSTBURG, MD-The Hampden-Sydney baseball team fell 15-11 in non-conference action to Frostburg State Sunday afternoon, wrapping up the regular season at 17-19 overall and 10-10 in the ODAC. The Tigers, seeded fifth in the upcoming ODAC Tournament, will face fourth seeded Shenandoah in Winchester for a best of three series in the opening round. The first game will be on Saturday, May 5 at 3:00 PM. The winner of that opening round series will advance to Lynchburg with the three other remaining teams.

In the Tigers' regular season finale, Frostburg State took an early lead which it was able to hold throughout. The Bobcats scored two runs in the first, and after Tyler Blevins (Draper, VA/Pulaski)batted in Devin Daugherty (Norcross, GA/Greater Atlanta Christian)in the top of the second, scored two more to take a 4-1 lead. 

The Tigers were able to tie the game, using a run from Brian Goodwyn (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale)in the third and runs from Blevins and Cody Smith (Bristol, VA/Virginia HS)in the fourth to make it a 4-4 game. 

Frostburg State responded, however, in the bottom half of the inning with five runs to go up 9-4. The extended that lead in the sixth with another run.

The Tigers kept coming back, and in the top of the seventh used back-to-back homeruns from Sam Feliciano (Bristow, VA/Patriot)and Daugherty to score three runs. 

After Frostburg State added another run in the bottom of the seventh, the Tigers made it a one run game in the top of the eighth. Feliciano and Daugherty each batted in another run with Moe Gothe (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale)and Andrew Kasiski (Chesapeake, VA/Indian River)scoring. Jacob Bartlett (Chesterfield, VA/Matoaca)then batted in Matt Muehleck (Martinsville, VA/Carlisle)to put the score at 11-10. 

The Bobcats helped secure the game in the bottom of the eighth, firing back with four runs to take a 15-10 lead into the final frame.

The Tigers were able to score again, with Feliciano batting in Gothe, but it was not enough.

Each team had had 12 hits, and five players collected two hits for the Tigers with Feliciano batting in a team-high four runs.

On the mound, Jonathan Triesler (Chesterfield, VA/Clover Hill)threw two innings, allowing four runs – two earned – on three hits and two walks with a strikeout. Jimmy Butler (Roanoke, VA/Patrick Henry)was the pitcher of decision, giving up five runs on three hits and two walks with a strikeout in 1.2 innings. Evan Lester (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale)and Hayden Basse (Fairfax Station, VA/Bishop O'Connell)each allowed a run in 1.2 innings of action, and Bradford Webb (Charlotte Court House, VA/Randolph-Henry)threw the final inning for the Tigers, allowing four runs on three hits and two walks while striking out three.

The Tigers extend their play into the post season where they will face Shenandoah in Winchester in a three game series beginning Saturday, May 5 at 3:00 PM.
