HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA-The Hampden-Sydney Tigers had a big eighth inning to end a pitcher's duel while upsetting fourth-ranked Randolph-Macon 8-1. The game was knotted at 1-1 through seven and a half innings, but the Tigers batted through the order while scoring seven in the eighth for the upset. The Tigers now improve to 14-15 overall and 7-8 in the ODAC while Randolph-Macon falls to 24-4-1 on the season and 14-2 in ODAC play.

Hampden-Sydney got on the board early with Devin Daugherty (Norcross, GA/Greater Atlanta Christian) driving in Jacob Bartlett (Chesterfield, VA/Matoaca) on a one-out RBI in the first.

After two scoreless innings behind strong pitching from both Jonathan Triesler (Chesterfield, VA/Clover Hill) and Michael Zubovich, Randolph-Macon tied the game with a run in the fourth. The Jackets also had runners on second and third with one out in the inning, but Triesler was able to get the final two outs while stranding the runners.

The pitching continued to dominate with neither offense able to get anything going through seven and a half innings.

Andrew Kasiski (Chesapeake, VA/Indian River) then came up big to break the tie, batting in Jayson Maitland (Colonial Heights, VA/Colonial Heights). Daugherty followed up that run with a sacrifice fly to score Bartlett for the second time on the day and give the Tigers a 3-1 lead.

The rally continued as Cody Smith (Bristol, VA/Virginia HS) and Tyler Blevins (Draper, VA/Pulaski) had back-to-back two-RBI hits to take a commanding 7-1 lead. Maitland, who scored the go-ahead run in the beginning of the inning, capped off the scoring with an RBI-single that scored Blevins.

Triesler had a strong outing, allowing one unearned run on just two hits in five and two-thirds innings. Trey Celata (Chesapeake, VA/Atlantic Shores Christian) threw 2.1 scoreless, giving up just one hit with two strikeouts. Bradford Webb (Charlotte Court House, VA/Randolph-Henry) finished the job, retiring the three batters he faced.

Offensively, the Tigers had nine hits to Randolph-Macon's three. Bartlett and Kasiski led the way with two hits each.

Hampden-Sydney will return to action tomorrow, Thursday, April 19 as they travel to Rocky Mount to face Ferrum. First pitch is set for 6:00 PM.
