Late Comeback Lifts VWU Over Tigers 7-6

NORFOLK, VA-Virginia Wesleyan used three runs in the eighth inning and a walk-off single in the ninth to come back from a late deficit to down the Tigers 7-6 in conference action. The game was back-and-forth throughout with the Marlins playing catch up most of the day. With the loss, the Tigers now stand at 10-11 overall and 4-4 in conference play; the Marlins improve to 17-7 overall and remain a perfect 9-0 in the ODAC. 

The Tigers took their first lead of the game in the top of the second as Ryan Clawson (Moseley, VA/Cosby) hit a two-run homerun that also scored Andrew Kasiski (Chesapeake, VA/Indian River)

Virginia Wesleyan tied the game in the fourth with two runs of their own, but the Tigers fired right back to reclaim the lead in the fifth with a run from Tyler Blevins (Draper, VA/Pulaski) on a sacrifice fly from Brian Goodwyn (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale).

Matthew Spagnolo (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) then batted in Chase Counts (Virginia Beach, VA/Ocean Lakes) in the sixth, upping the lead to 4-2. 

Virginia Wesleyan cut the lead back to one in the bottom of the sixth.

Clawson and Cody Smith (Bristol, VA/Virginia HS) drew back-to-back bases loaded walks to score Kasiski and Spagnolo in the eighth to put the Tigers up 6-3. 

Virginia Wesleyan then tied the game in the bottom of the eighth with three runs. 

After the Tigers were retired in order in the top of the ninth, Virginia Wesleyan got two runners on with one out, and scored the game-winning run with an RBI-single.

Offensively, the Tigers had eight hits to Virginia Wesleyan's ten. Counts and Spagnolo each had two hits, while Clawson batted in three runs, and Kasiski scored two. 

On the mound, Nic Graziano (Virginia Beach, VA/First Colonial) allowed two runs on three hits and three walks with six strikeouts in 3.2 innings. Trey Celata (Chesapeake, VA/Atlantic Shores Christian) allowed a run on two hits with three strikeouts in 2.1 innings, and Jonathan Triesler (Chesterfield, VA/Clover Hill) was the pitcher of decision, allowing four runs on five hits and three walks with a strikeout in 2.1 innings. 

Hampden-Sydney will return home to host the Eagles of Bridgewater College in a double header this Saturday, April 7. First pitch is set for 12:00 PM.
