HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA-The Captains of Christopher Newport used a five-run inning en route to a 9-3 victory at Ty Cobb Ballpark on Monday afternoon. The Tigers fall to 10-6 on the season while Christopher Newport improves to 19-4.
Each team threatened in the first few innings, but could not score as they each stranded three runners early, while leaving the scoreboard blank through four innings.
It was the Captains, however, who finally broke through in the top of the fifth, using six hits and one Tiger error to take a commanding 5-0 lead.
The Tigers chipped into the lead in the sixth, as Chase Counts (Virginia Beach, VA/Ocean Lakes) helped to put the Tigers on the board with an RBI to score Jacob Bartlett (Chesterfield, VA/Matoaca). Brian Goodwyn (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale) then scored on a stolen base and a throwing error.
The Captains matched those two runs in the next frame to push their lead back to five at 7-2.
The scoring continued into the bottom half of the seventh with Moe Gothe (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale) going yard to make it 7-3.
Christopher Newport extended the lead in the top of the ninth to the final score of 9-3.
Offensively, the Tigers had seven hits to the Captains' 13. Goodwyn had a strong day, going 3-for-4.
On the bump, Wyatt Brock (Virginia Beach, VA/Floyd E. Kellam) had a strong start to the game, throwing three shutout innings while allowing just one hit with one strikeout. The Tigers then used eight pitchers for the remaining six innings.
The Tigers have a quick turnaround, returning to action tomorrow as they face Randolph-Macon in Ashland. First pitch is set for 3:30 PM.
