HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA-The Hampden-Sydney baseball team used a high powered offense to overpower Southern Vermont 15-5 in non-conference action. The Tigers scored at least one run in all but one inning, with all nine Tigers crossing the plate. The Tigers now improve to 8-4 overall while the Mountaineers drop to 1-6.
The Tigers first struck in the bottom of the first, with Andrew Kasiski (Chesapeake, VA/Indian River) driving in Jacob Bartlett (Chesterfield, VA/Matoaca) to go up 1-0. Ryan Clawson (Moseley, VA/Cosby) then stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs and pushed the lead to 3-0 with a two-RBI double that scored Kasiski and Devin Daugherty (Norcross, GA/Greater Atlanta Christian). Jonathan Triesler (Chesterfield, VA/Clover Hill) and Bartlett helped make it 5-0 by grabbing free bases with the bags loaded.
The Mountaineers scored a run in the top half of the second, but Chase Counts (Virginia Beach, VA/Ocean Lakes) picked up right where the Tigers left off in the bottom of the first, leading off with a triple and scoring on a sacrifice fly from Daugherty.
The Tigers put two more on the board in the third with Triesler scoring on an RBI-single from Brian Goodwyn (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale), and Goodwyn later sliding across home on a double steal.
Cody Smith (Bristol, VA/Virginia HS) became the ninth Tiger to score, when he made it 10-2 in the bottom of the sixth on a sacrifice fly from Goodwyn.
The Mountaineers finally broke through in the top of the seventh, scoring three runs to make it a 10-5 game.
Smith kept the scoring going for the Tigers in the bottom of the seventh, batting in Kasiski and Blevins with a double. Triesler then cracked the bat with a three-run homerun to go up 15-5.
After Evan Lester (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale) pitched a shutout eighth, the game was called with not enough day light.
Offensively, the Tigers recorded 16 hits, with Blevins going 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Clawson and Triesler combined to bat seven runs in while scoring two each.
On the mound, Harrison Moncure (Glen Allen, VA/Mills Godwin) earned the victory, allowing just one run in five innings while holding the Mountaineers to one hit and three walks while striking out seven. Bradford Webb (Charlotte Court House, VA/Randolph Academy) allowed four runs on six hits and a walk with two strikeouts. Lester pitched 1.1 scoreless innings while striking out one.
Hampden-Sydney will return to action Saturday, March 17 as the Tigers travel to Emory, VA to face the Wasps of Emory & Henry for a double header. First pitch is set for 12:00 PM.
