Baseball Sweeps H-SC Classic Day One

Devin Daugherty

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA-The Hampden-Sydney baseball team used a potent offense to sweep the first day of the H-SC Classic, using 31 hits to score 22 total runs, defeating York (Pa.) 11-4 and Dension 11-10. With the wins, the Tigers improve to 5-1 on the season.

The Tigers took the first game of the day 11-4 over York behind a strong offense that produced 14 hits, including three that went for extra bases.

The team wasted no time putting those 11 runs on the board, scoring its first run in the first inning when Matt Spagnolo (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) hit an RBI-triple to score Jacob Bartlett (Chesterfield, VA/Matoaca). Spagnolo then crossed the plate on an sacrifice fly from Devin Daugherty (Norcross, GA/Greater Atlanta Christian).

The lead was pushed further in the second inning, that included another RBI from Spagnolo as he batted in Bartlett again. Bartlett also batted in a run, scoring Austin Spivak (Newport News, VA/Menchville), and Sam Feliciano (Bristow, VA/Patriot) was able to get home when Blake Hartman (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale) reached first.

Chase Counts (Virginia Beach, VA/Ocean Lakes) upped the lead to 6-0 in the third, scoring when Feliciano reached first on an error.

The Tiger offense continued to score in the fifth, and Spivak crossed home for the second time with Tyler Blevins (Draper, VA/Pulaski) hitting an RBI-double.

York was able to get on the scoreboard in the seventh with a run, but Blevins matched and Bartlett doubled it in the bottom half of the inning, scoring on an RBI-single from Matt Muehleck (Martinsville, VA/Carlisle).

York scored again with two runs in the eighth, but the Tigers again matched those runs with Andrew Brooks (Chesapeake, VA/Greenbrier Christian Academy) and Cory Allgood (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale) scoring.

York did score one more in the ninth.

Hartman led all batters with three hits, while Spagnolo, Spivak, and Feliciano each had two. Bartlett went 1-for-2 with three runs scored and two batted in.

On the mound, Jimmy Butler (Roanoke, VA/Patrick Henry) picked up the win after allowing just one run on three hits and three walks with four strikeouts in 6.1 innings. Trent Jacobs (Farmville, VA/Fuqua) pitched 0.2 scoreless innings, and Wyatt Brock (Virginia Beach, VA/Floyd E. Kellam) and Bradford Webb (Charlotte Court House, VA/Randolph-Henry) each pitched one inning.

Offense came early for both teams in game two, with Denison and Hampden-Sydney combining for eight runs in the first inning. After Denison scored three to start the game, Counts batted in Cody Smith (Bristol, VA/Virginia HS) and Bartlett to get the Tigers started. Counts then scored on an error on the same play that Ryan Clawson (Moseley, VA/Cosby) batted in Spivak. Blevins then made it a 5-3 game in favor of the Tigers, scoring on an RBI-single from Andrew Kasiski (Chesapeake, VA/Indian River).

After two scoreless innings, Denison hit a solo homerun to make it 5-4, but Moe Gothe (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale) drove Bartlett home to push the lead back to two.

Blevins and Hartman scored in the fifth and sixth to put the Tigers up 8-4, but Denison had a big seventh, scoring five to take a 9-8 lead.

Clawson scored in the bottom of the frame to tie the game.

The back-and-forth battle continued in the eighth with Denison reclaiming the lead before Feliciano tied the game, scoring on a Blevins RBI-single.

After the Tigers held Denison at bay in the top of the ninth, Daugherty hit a walk off single that scored Hartman in the bottom of the ninth.

The Tigers knocked 17 hits, including a 3-for-5 performance from Gothe.

Chase Mayberry (Appomattox, VA/Appomattox) threw the first six innings, allowing four runs – two earned – on four hits and a walk with nine strikeouts. Jayson Maitland (Colonial Heights, VA/Colonial Heights) threw a scoreless inning, and Jonathan Triesler (Chesterfield, VA/Clover Hill) allowed one run in two innings.

The Tigers will wrap up the action in the H-SC Classic tomorrow afternoon, as they will play Denison at 3:00 PM.
