Tigers Down Marymount 7-4

Chase Counts

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA-The Hampden-Sydney baseball team improved to 3-1 on the season while winning its second straight game after a 7-4 decision over Marymount. The Tigers used six runs from the third to fifth innings to take the win.

The game was back and forth for the first three innings, but the Tigers broke it open with a run in the fourth and three more in the fifth to take a four run lead.

The Tigers were the first to strike, with Jacob Bartlett (Chesterfield, VA/Matoaca) scored on a Chase Counts (Virginia Beach, VA/Ocean Lakes) RBI-single.

The Saints fired right back with a run of their own in the top of the second. Marymount then took its first lead of the game with two runs in the top of the third.

The lead, however, was short lived as the Tigers matched the runs in the bottom half of the inning with Devin Daugherty (Norcross, GA/Greater Atlanta Christian) and Austin Spivak (Newport News, VA/Menchville) both scoring.

The Tigers reclaimed the lead in the fourth with Counts again batting in Bartlett.

Cody Smith (Bristol, VA/Virginia HS) helped push that lead in the fifth with a two-RBI double  that scored Jonathan Triesler (Chesterfield, VA/Clover Hill) and Sam Feliciano (Bristow, VA/Patriot). Smith then made it 7-3, scoring on a Bartlett RBI-single.

Marymount did break its scoring drought in the top of the seventh, but the combination of Hayden Basse (Fairfax Station, VA/Bishop O'Connell) and Triesler kept them at bay.

Offensively, the Tigers had 12 hits, including a 4-for-5 day from Counts. Bartlett and Matt Spagnolo (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) each added two.

Harrison Moncure (Glen Allen, VA/Mills Godwin) threw five solid innings, picking up the win after allowing three runs – two earned – on six hits and three walks with six strikeouts. Trey Celata (Chesapeake, VA/Atlantic Shores Christian) allowed an unearned run on three hits and a walk, and Basse threw 1.2 scoreless innings, giving up just one hit. Triesler earned his second save of the year after striking out two in a scoreless ninth.

The Tigers return to action on Saturday, March 3 as they host York and Denison at 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM, respectively, in the H-SC Classic.
