HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA-The Hampden-Sydney baseball team finished its weekend of the Floyd B. Wilcox Memorial Tournament at 2-1 after defeating Wesley 8-4 in the finale. The game went back and forth, but the Tigers used four runs in the bottom of the eighth to take the win.
Wesley was the first to reach the scoreboard, courtesy a solo homerun from Cody Dmiterchick in the top of the second.
Matt Spagnolo (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) tied the game in the bottom of the third, scoring on an Andrew Kasiski (Chesapeake, VA/Indian River) RBI. Chase Counts (Virginia Beach, VA/Ocean Lakes) then batted in Jacob Bartlett (Chesterfield, VA/Matoaca) on batter later to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead.
Spagnolo and Bartlett crossed the plate again – Spagnolo on an RBI-double from Bartlett , and Bartlett on a Wesley error - to up the lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the fourth.
Wesley used the long ball again in the sixth as Chris Seibert's two run homerun made it a 4-3 game.
The Wolverines then added one more run in the top of the seventh with two outs to tie the game at 4-4.
The Tigers reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the eighth in exciting fashion. With two outs and Counts on second base, Devin Daugherty (Norcross, GA/Greater Atlanta Christian) pinch hit and ripped a single to right field that scored Counts and put the Tigers up 5-4.
Bartlett then stepped up and drove in another run, scoring pinch runner Cory Allgood (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale) with an RBI single. Cody Smith (Bristol, VA/Virginia HS) then added insurance runs, batting in Bartlett and Spagnolo with a single.
Jonathan Triesler (Chesterfield, VA/Clover Hill) then threw his second straight scoreless inning to pick up the win.
Offensively, the Tigers had 11 hits to Wesley's nine. Bartlett led the way, going 3-for-4 with three runs, two RBI, and a double. Spagnolo and Counts each had two hits while Spagnolo scored three runs.
On the mound, Nic Graziano (Virginia Beach, VA/First Colonial) threw five solid innings, allowing one run on five hits and two walks with six strikeouts.
Hampden-Sydney will return to action Wednesday, February 28 as they host Marymount University. First pitch is set for 2:30 PM.
