HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA-Hampden-Sydney baseball had a very productive offensive day while sweeping the Royals of Eastern Mennonite in an ODAC double header. The Tigers won by scores of 13-7 and 11-6. The Tigers now improve to 20-15 on the season and 9-8 in the ODAC, while the Royals drop to 17-19 overall and 4-13 in conference play.
The Tigers trailed early in game one with Eastern Mennonite scoring two runs in each the second and fourth innings, but the Tigers used the long ball to tie the game and later take the lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Tigers knotted the game at 4-4 when Chase Counts (Virginia Beach, VA/Ocean Lakes) hit a grand slam.
Devin Daugherty (Norcross, GA/Greater Atlanta Christian School) then gave the Tigers a 7-4 lead on a three-run homerun in the fifth.
Kasiski got in the scoring action again in the seventh, batting in Jacob Fontana (Midlothian, VA/Clover Hill) on a single. Counts scored his second run of the game on a wild pitch, and Kasiski later scored in the inning on a Matthew Spagnolo (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) RBI-single.
Eastern Mennonite added one to the board in the top of the eighth, but two runs from the Tigers behind Brian Goodywn (Chester, VA/Thomas Dale) and Daugherty put the lead back up to 13-5.
The Royals did score two in the ninth, but Jonathan Triesler (Chesterfield, VA/Clover Hill) capped off his four innings with a save. Triesler allowed three runs – two earned – on six hits and a walk with five strikeouts.
Chase Mayberry (Appomattox, VA/Appomattox) threw the first four innings, allowing four runs – three earned – on six hits and two walks with two strikeouts. Trey Celata (Chesapeake, VA/Atlantic Shores Christian) picked up the win, throwing one scoreless inning, surrendering one hit while striking out one.
Offensively, the Tigers had 19 hits to the Royals' 13. Fontana led the way with four hits while Goodwyn and Kasiski each had three.
Game two started much like the first with EMU taking the early lead at 3-0 after two innings.
Cody Smith (Bristol, VA/Virginia HS) put the Tigers on the board when he stole home in the bottom of the third, and Goodwyn brought the Tigers within one, crossing the plate on a Daugherty RBI-single.
After Kasiski tied the game in the fourth, Smith hit a two-run homerun to put the Tigers up 5-3.
Kasiski scored again in the sixth, this time on an RBI-double from Sutphin to go up 6-3.
The Royals cut it to 6-4 in the top of the seventh, but Triesler scored in the bottom half of the frame on a Jayson Maitland (Colonial Heights, VA/Colonial Heights) RBI to push the Tiger lead back to three. The Tigers continued to extend their lead in the inning, with Fontana, Maitland, Kasiski, and Jacob Barlett (Chesterfield, VA/Matoaca) all crossing the plate to go up 11-4.
The Royals added two runs to their total in the eighth, but the Tiger lead was too much to overcome.
Celata picked up his second win of the day and sixth of the season after pitching two scoreless innings. Mathew Metheny (New Kent, VA/New Kent) allowed three runs on five hits and two walks in two innings. Charles Murrah (Athens, GA/Maclay School) pitched one scoreless inning, and Michael Flanagan (Moseley, VA/Cosby) and Maitland each tossed two innings. Flanagan allowed one run and Maitland allowed two unearned; each gave up three hits and struck out one.
Offensively, the Tigers had 12 hits to EMU's 13. Kasiski and Sutphin each led the way with three hits.
The Tigers return to action Tuesday, April 25 as they travel to Norfolk to face the Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan. First pitch is set for 3:30 PM.
