Baseball Wins Sixth Straight, 15-5 Over Ferrum

FERRUM, VA-The Hampden-Sydney baseball team extended its win streak to six while improving to 8-2 on the season with 15-5 win at Ferrum Wednesday evening. The Tigers had another strong day at the plate, recording 15 hits. On the mound, Trevor Otey (Williamsburg, VA/Christchurch) picked up the win after going five innings, allowing three runs on four hits and three walks while striking out five.

Hampden-Sydney got off to a quick 4-0 lead courtesy two runs in each of the first two innings. In the top of the first, the first three batters for Hampden-Sydney recorded hits with John Lloyd (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) batting in leadoff man Spencer Wiles (Belmont, NC/South Point). Nathan Chamberlin (Chesterfield, VA/Virginia Wesleyan) later used a sacrifice fly to score Christian Hamlett (Midlothian, VA/Cosby).

In the second, Hampden-Sydney used the same combination to up its lead with Lloyd batting in Wiles. Chamberlin later picked up his second RBI with a two-out single to drive in Lloyd.

Ferrum got on the board in the bottom of the third with Ty Comer knocking in Gage Staton on a two-out RBI-single.

Chamberlin scored a run of his own in the fourth, scoring on an error after Jeff Gray (Newport News, VA/Menchville) scored the same way.

Ferrum's run in the third led to momentum, and the Panthers tacked on one run in each of the fourth and fifth and two in the six to come within one at 6-5.

Hampden-Sydney responded, however, with a big seventh inning, scoring four runs with Wiles, Gray, and Lloyd all batting in runs. Lloyd and Wiles, along with Hamlett and Jackson Rogers (Sterling, VA/Potomac Falls), also scored a run each.

Hampden-Sydney did not stop there, piling on three more runs in the eighth and two in the ninth. Gray collected two more RBI, and Chamberlin knocked in a run with a double.

In the ninth, Kyle Lung (Williamsburg, VA/Mary Washington) got into the action, driving in a run with a single. After Lung reached base, Dustin Wiles (Belmont, NC/South Point) crossed the plate on a passed ball.  

Reggie Johnson (Dunnsville, VA/Essex) pitched three innings, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks with two strikeouts. Dylan Gonzales (Richmond, VA/Bridgewater) closed out the game with a shutout ninth, allowing just one hit.

At the plate, Wiles and Lloyd led the group with three hits each with Wiles scoring four runs and Lloyd driving in four. Hamlett, Gray, and Chamberlin all recorded two hits with Gray and Chamberlin each driving in three runs.

Trevor Almond started the game for Ferrum, pitching two innings, allowing four runs – just two earned – on four hits. Kyle Long took the loss after allowing two unearned runs on three hits and three walks in three innings of work.

Hampden-Sydney returns to action this Thursday, February 27, as the Tigers host Christopher Newport. First pitch is set for 3:00 pm.
