Tigers Fall in Extras at CNU

Jeffrey Gray

NEWPORT NEWS, VA-After a hard fought 12 innings, Christopher Newport scored the game-winning run to narrowly edge the Tigers 3-2 at Captains Park. The Tigers fall to 2-2 on the season and wrap up their four-game stretch in three days with a home contest against Ferrum tomorrow afternoon. The Captains improve to 1-0 on the season.

Hampden-Sydney's Billy Nixon (Sedley, VA/Southampton) and Christopher Newport's Bryan Bierlein were both tough on the bump to start, allowing no runs on just one hit through the first two innings. Christopher Newport's bats came alive in the third, however, scoring two runs on two hits.

The Tigers returned the favor in the top of the fourth with two runs of their own.  After John Lloyd (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) singled and Jeff Gray (Newport News, VA/Menchville) doubled, Andrew Tucker (Fincastle, VA/James River) and Nathan Chamberlin (Chesterfield, VA/Virginia Wesleyan) drove them in with a sacrifice fly and double, respectively.

The pitching for both teams then kept the opposing offenses not only off the scoreboard but off the basepaths. After each team scored two runs, there were only four combined hits through the top of the 12th.

Christopher Newport then led off the bottom of the 12 with a double from Austin Kilbourne. With first and second open after a sacrifice bunt moved Klbourne to third, the Tigers intentionally walked the next to batters, loading the bases. Preston Grissom then drove in the game-winning run as he was walked.

Nixon went four innings, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks. He also struck out two. Matt Hinson (Kinston, NC/Arendell Parrott Academy) struck out three and walked two in two scoreless innings while Spencer Garrett (Mableton, GA/Whitefield Academy) struck out one in a shutout inning. Michael Flanagan (Moseley, VA/Cosby) was the pitcher of decision, allowing one run on one hit and three walks in 0.1 innings worked.

Bierlein allowed two runs on three hits and one walk while striking out three in five innings. Kilbourne picked up the win after pitching three scoreless innings.

Hampden-Sydney recorded five hits on the day with Lloyd, Gray, Tucker, Chamberlin, and Lee Carneal (Charlottesville, VA/Albemarle) each recording one.

The Tigers return to action tomorrow, Monday, February 9, as they host the Panthers of Ferrum College. First pitch is set for 3:00 PM.
