DANVILLE, VA-The Tigers were the first to get on the scoreboard in 2014, but Averett University used five runs to take a 5-2 decision in Danville in Hampden-Sydney's baseball season opener. The Tigers drop to 0-1 on the very young season, and Averett starts its year 1-0.
Hampden-Sydney wasted no time getting on the scoreboard in 2014, with leadoff hitter Christian Hamlett (Midlothian, VA/Cosby) hitting a single and later being driven in by a John Lloyd (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) RBI single.
The Cougars fired back in the second inning, however, tying the game at 1-1 with Nic Futrell batting in Taylor Davis for an unearned run.
Following the run, the combination of Trevor Otey (Williamsburg, VA/Christchurch), Reggie Johnson (Dunnsville, VA/Essex), and Spencer Garrett (Mableton, GA/Whitefield Academy) shut down the Averett bats, holding the Cougars scoreless from the third inning through the fifth inning.
The Cougars unknotted the game in the sixth with Chatham Currie scoring on a wild pitch.
Hampden-Sydney responded by putting runners on second and third in the top of the seventh as Lloyd walked, Jeff Gray (Newport News, VA/Menchville) singled, and Andrew Tucker (Fincastle, VA/Jamers River) was able to advance the runners. Averett's Cody Beaver took the mound, though, and recorded two straight outs to keep the home team ahead.
Averett added insurance runs with a score on an error in the seventh inning and two more in the eighth courtesy a two-RBI single from Davis.
In the top of the ninth, the Tigers hit the scoreboard again with Tucker batting in Lloyd on a one-out double.
Hampden-Sydney recorded six hits to Averett's four, with Tucker going 2-for-3 on the day. Hamlett, Gray, Lloyd, and Spencer Wiles (Belmont, NC/South Point) each recorded one hit.
On the mound, the Tigers used eight pitchers with each recording one inning of work. Garrett and Billy Nixon (Sedley, VA/Southampton) each led the team with two strikeouts. Sophomore Matt Hinson (Kinston, NC/Arendell Parrott Academy) is the Tigers' pitcher of decision, allowing one run in the sixth.
Averett's Cody Moore picked up the win after allowing one run on four hits in six innings. He struck out six while not walking any batters.
The Tigers return to action Thursday, February 6 as they travel to Newport News to face the Captains of Christopher Newport. First pitch is set for 2:00 PM.
