North Carolina Wesleyan Downs Tiger Baseball 8-0

ROCKY MOUNT, NC-North Carolina Wesleyan's Hatteras Brooks threw a complete game shutout while allowing just four hits as the Battling Bishops were able to defeat the Hampden-Sydney Tigers 8-0 in Rocky Mount. With the loss, Hampden-Sydney falls to 9-14 on the season while standing at 4-2 in ODAC play. The Bishops now stand at 15-17 and 2-6 in the USA South.

The Bishops wasted no time building a lead, scoring two runs in the first inning, and one run in each of the following three frames to take a 5-0 advantage after four innings.

Senior Mikey Riva (Los Angeles, VA/Wildwood) broke up Brooks' no hitter with a single in the top of the third inning.

Rookie Garrett Birnbaum (Moseley, VA/Cosby) was able to retire all three batters in the fifth inning, but North Carolina Wesleyan was able to score a run in each of their final three half innings to take the 8-0 victory.

Aaron Van Allen (Danville, VA/Tunstall) was the losing pitcher, going 2.2 innings and allowing four runs on four hits, six walks, and one strikeout. Birnbaum allowed two runs on three hits, one walk, and three strikeouts in 2.2 innings. Aaron Stidham (Roanoke, VA/William Byrd) and Dalton Renick (Glen Allen, VA/Deep Run) each allowed one run on two hits in a combined 2.2 innings.

Riva, Jeff Gray (Newport News, VA/Menchville), Patrick Kuhns (Stafford, VA/North Stafford) and Andrew Tucker (Fincastle, VA/James River) all recorded a hit.

The Bishop offense was powered by Jake Alexander and Brad Guengerich who went 4-for-5 and 3-for-4, respectively.

Hampden-Sydney will remain on the road as it returns to action Saturday, March 31 in an ODAC double header against Eastern Mennonite. The first game is scheduled for 12:00 pm.
