SWEET BRIAR, VA – The Hampden-Sydney Tennis team opened ODAC competition with a neutral site game vs. Emory & Henry and the Wasps came out on top 9-0.
Zach King (Henrico, VA / Mills Godwin) and David Dodson (Roanoke, VA / Cave Spring) took an 8-3 loss at #1 doubles while Lawrence Bowers (New Bern, NC / Arendell Parrott Academy) and Houghton Flanagan (Charlotte, NC / Myers Park) fell 8-4 at the #2 flight. Houston Wilson (Norfolk, VA / Norfolk Collegiate) and Aleksandar Turkovic (Belgrade, Serbia / Miller School) were defeated 8-3 at the #3 spot.
King lost 6-3, 6-3 at #1 singles, Dodson lost 6-1, 6-1 at #2, and Bowers fell 6-0, 6-2. Flanagan took a hard fought loss in #4 singles. He dropped the first set 6-3 but won the second 5-7 to force a third set tiebreaker. Adam Henderson ended up with a 10-6 advantage in the tiebreaker for the win. Wilson also forced a tiebreaker as he won the first set 5-7 but lost the second 6-1. In the tiebreaker, Webster Gilley came out on top 10-8. Turkovic forced a tiebreaker as well. He dropped the first set 6-4 but came back to win the second 5-7. Zach Eccher did most of the damage in the tiebreaker, taking it 10-2.
Hampden-Sydney continues on the road this Wednesday with a 3 pm contest at Methodist University.
