FREDERICKSBURG, VA - Houghton Flanagan (Charlotte, NC / Myers Park) and the Hampden-Sydney Tennis team excelled at the ITA Regional Tournament over the weekend.
Flanagan, competing at the B7 singles flight, won his Round of 16 matchup 8-5 and then won 8-6 in the quarterfinals. He needed a tiebreaker to win his first set in the semi-finals, but breezed by in the second set to advance to the finals, 7-8(7), 6-1. Flanagan won the first set 6-3 in the finals but went on to drop the second (4-6) and third (0-6) sets.
Flanagan and Alex Turkovic won the B4 doubles championship. They took their first round matchup 8-4, the quarterfinal match 8-5, and won in the semifinals 8-3 to advance to the finals match. They won the finals via walkover as one of the teammates on the other side of the net was unable to compete due to severe cramping.
David Dodson, competing at B4 singles, won first first round duel 8-1 and took his quarterfinals match 8-5. He ended up losing in the semi-finals by a score of 3-6, 2-6. Houston Wilson also advanced to the semi-finals at B8. He won his first two rounds easily by scores of 8-3, 8-2 but dropped the semi-finals 2-6, 1-6.
Zach King (Henrico, VA / Mills Godwin) lost in the B2 quarterfinals 3-8. Watt Mountcastle (Richmond, VA / Freeman) took a 2-6, 3-6 defeat in the B5 consolation quarterfinals. Lawrence Bowers advanced to the B6 consolation semis, but lost 5-7, 2-6. Turkovic received a first round bye in B9 but was defeated 5-8 in the quarterfinals.
Dodson and Mountcastle teamed together in B3 doubles to drop a heartbreaking quarterfinal matchup 8-9(4). Bowers and King played together in B4 doubles, also losing in the quarterfinals, 6-8.
The Tigers will compete at the Hampton Roads Collegiate Tennis Invitational this Friday-Sunday.
