Tennis Sweeps Lynchburg 9-0

LYNCHBURG, VA - The tennis Tigers swept Lynchburg College 9-0 on the road Wednesday afternoon.

Kevin Calhoun (Richmond, VA / Mills Godwin) and Ian Sammler (Petersburg, VA / Prince George) defeated Matt Karvelas and Derek Kegerris 8-4 at #1 doubles. At #2 doubles, Barrett Polan (Greenwich, CT / Greenwich) and Zack King (Henrico, VA / Mills Godwin) took down Cody Crampton and Owen Landon 8-3. Watt Mountcastle (Richmond, VA / Freeman) and Houghton Flanagan (Charlotte, NC / Myers Park) rounded out doubles with a 8-5 win over Christian Golden and Casey Vines.

Calhoun, playing at #1 singles, beat Karvelas in three sets. Calhoun dropped the first set 3-6 but took the second set 7-5. Calhoun then took the third set 10-5 under tiebreaker rules. King won all 12 points as he went 6-0, 6-0 against Crampton. Sammler defeated Landon 6-2, 6-0 at #3 singles.

Ryan Davis (Roanoke, VA / Cave Spring) dropped his first set at #4 singles 2-6 against Vines, but rebounded to win the second 6-2. Davis then took the third set 10-4 using tiebreaker rules. Mountcastle dispatched Golden 6-4, 6-2 at #5 singles, and Franklin Bowers (New Bern, NC / Arendell Parrott Academy) won #6 singles by default.

The Tigers return to the courts on Thursday as they host the Eagles of Bridgewater College at 3:30 pm.
