Methodist Defeats H-SC Tennis 8-1
HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA - Methodist, ranked 14th in the region, defeated Hampden-Sydney tennis 8-1, sweeping all six singles matches on Thursday afternoon.
Kevin Calhoun (Richmond, VA / Mills Godwin) and Ian Sammler (Petersburg, VA / Prince George) teamed at #1 doubles to earn the Tigers lone win, defeating Duncan Miller and Hans Baumstark 8-4. Barrett Polan (Greenwich, CT / Greenwich) and Zack King (Henrico, VA / Mills Godwin) lost 8-5 at #2 doubles while Ryan Davis (Roanoke, VA / Cave Spring) and Franklin Bowers (New Bern, NC / Arendell Parrott Academy) lost 8-2 at #3.
Calhoun had an intensely fought back-and-forth match to Miller but narrlowly lost the match 6-4, 7-5. King fell 6-0, 6-1 at #2 while Sammler went down 6-3, 6-0 at the #4 flight. Davis lost 6-0, 6-2 and Houghton Flanagan (Charlotte, NC / Myers Park) took a 6-3, 6-1 defeat. Polan rounded out singles play with a 6-1, 6-4 loss.
The tennis team will resume play on Sunday against Salisbury University on the campus of Mary Washington University in Fredericksburg, VA.
