Tigers Drop Hard Fought Decision 7-2 to Guilford
GREENSBORO, NC - The Tiger tennis team drooped a hard fought and competitive match against the Guilford College Quakers 7-2.
Kevin Calhoun (Richmond, VA / Mills Godwin) and Ian Sammler (Petersburg, VA / Prince George) teamed up at #1 doubles to topple Tyler Mercier and Clayton Hamilton in a marathon match, winning 9-8 (7-5). Turner Votipka and Colin Rapp took down Barrett Polan (Greenwich, CT / Greenwich) and Zach King (Henrico, VA / Mills Godwin) at #2 doubles 8-3 while Ben Nelson and Charlie Smith defeated Ryan Davis (Roanoke, VA / Cave Spring) and Franklin Bowers (New Bern, NC / Arendell Parrott Academy) 8-4 at the #3 flight.
David took the lone singles win at the #4 spot, defeating Colin Rapp 6-4, 6-1. Mercier, the reigning ODAC Rookie of the Year and an ODAC Player of the Year contender, won the first set vs. Calhoun 6-0. Calhoun rebounded strong to take the second set 6-3, but Mercier shook off the set loss with a decisive 6-1 win in the third set to take the match.
Hamilton also needed three sets to defeat Sammler. Hamilton took the first set by a close score of 6-4 while Sammler took the second set by a tight score of 7-5. Hamilton then won the third set with tiebreaker rules, winning 10-4 to win the match.
Mark Cheong won in straight sets at the #5 flight over Houghton Flanagan (Charlotte, NC / Myers Park) but had to fight for every point, taking the first set 6-4 and the second 7-5. Votipka took down King at #2 singles 6-0, 6-3, while Nelson took a 6-3, 6-0 #6 win over Polan.
The Tigers will return to the court on Wednesday for their home opener against Virginia Wesleyan at 3:30 pm.
