SALEM, VA - Hampden-Sydney tennis took down Roanoke College 8-1 on the road Thursday afternoon.
Kevin Calhoun (Richmond, VA / Mills Godwin) and Ian Sammler (Petersburg, VA / Prince George) teamed up at #1 doubles to dispatch of James Lee and CHarles Graves 8-4. The Migliarese brothers, Greg and Chris, got the Maroons their lone win with a 9-8 (3-7) victory at #2 doubles over Barrett Polan (Greenwich, CT / Greenwich) and Zack King (Henrico, VA / Mills Godwin). Ryan Davis (Roanoke, VA / Cave Spring) and Franklin Bowers (New Bern, NC / Arendell Parrott Academy) got the Tigers their second win of the match with a 8-3 #3 doubles win over Lewis Young and Ian Webster.
Calhoun earned a hard fought victory at the #1 singlkes flight, losing the first set 6-7 but taking the next two sets by a score of 6-4. King breezed to a 6-3, 6-2 #2 win while Sammler also fared well at the #3 flight, winning 6-1, 6-2.
Davis, competing at #4 singles, won the first set 7-5 but lost the second 4-6. He bounced back to win the third set 10-6 using tiebreaker rules since the Tigers had already won six of the seven matches to earn the win. Houghton Flanagan (Charlotte, NC / Myers Park) went down 5-7 in the first set to Chris Migliarese but took over the match from there, winning the next two sets by a score of 6-0, 6-2. Polan likewise lost the first set 5-7. He breezed to a 6-0 second set win but had to hold off a pesky Ian Webster in the third set as Polan earned a 7-6 (7-5) win in the set to win the match.
Hampden-Sydney will host Washington & Lee University, ranked #7 in the South Atlantic region, on Saturday at 1 p.m.
