LYNCHBURG, VA - The H-SC tennis team breezed to a 9-0 sweep over ODAC rival Randolph College on Thursday.
The #1 doubles team of Kevin Calhoun (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) and Ian Sammler (Petersburg, VA/Prince George) took down Randolph's duo 8-4. Barrett Polan (Greenwich, CT / Greenwich) and Zach King (Henrico, VA / Mills Godwin) took down Shaun Chopp and Ben See 8-1. Watt Mountcastle (Richmond, VA / Freeman) and Houghton Flanagan (Charlotte, NC / Myers Park) didn't allow a point as they took the #3 doubles match by a score of 8-0.
The decisive winning ways continued as the teams went to singles as the Tigers won each match in straight sets. Calhoun won at the #1 flight 6-3, 6-0, King surrendered just one point in a 6-1, 6-0 #2 win, and Sammler took a 6-1, 6-1 decision at #3 singles. Ryan Davis (Roanoke, VA / Cave Spring) needed a tiebreaker to take the first set, but he went on to win 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 at the #4 flight. Franklin Bowers (New Bern, NC / Arendell Parrott Academy) also faced a tough challenge in the first set but recovered strong with a 7-5, 6-0 win at #5. Flanagan closed out singles competition at the sixth flight with a 6-3, 6-1 victory.
The Tigers will hit the courts on March 22 at Roanoke College for a 3:30 pm tilt.
