Hampden-Sydney Tennis Advances to ODAC Championship Match for Fourth Consecutive Year
LEXINGTON, VA - The Hampden-Sydney tennis team advanced to the ODAC Championship match for the fourth consecutive year on Saturday with a 5-0 win over Bridgewater College at Washington & Lee. The Tigers will square off against Washington & Lee in the title game, also for the fourth consecutive season, at 2 pm on Saturday with W&L having won 2-of-3.
Hampden-Sydney breezed to three wins in doubles play. Rich Pugh (Augusta, GA/Lakeside) and Tal Covington (Gainesville, VA/Flint Hill) got back on track at the #1 flight with an 8-3 win. Shad Harrell (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) and Kevin Calhoun (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) won 8-3 at the #2 spot while Zack Pack (Keysville, VA/Randlph-Henry) and Ian Sammler (Prince George, VA/Prince George)took care of the third flight with an 8-2 decision.
Harrell and Calhoun recorded the two needed singles victories to win the match. Harrell took a 6-3, 6-4 win at the #2 flight while Calhoun earned a 6-3, 6-3 victory at the #3 spot. Pugh's #1 match went in to an epic tiebreaker in the first set, 6-7 (10-12), marking his first set loss against an ODAC opponent this season, however, if will not be counted in his official statistics due to the match being unfinished.
