ROANOKE, VA (March 22, 2010)– The Hampden-Sydney tennis Tigers extended their season opening seven match win streak today against Roanoke by a tally of 7-2. After taking two of three doubles matches, the Tigers were able to finish off the Maroons by winning five of the six singles matches.
In the doubles matchups, the no. 1 team of senior William Moss (Fredericksburg, VA/Fredericksburg) and junior Rich Pugh (Augusta, GA/Lakeside) were unable to find their usual consistency and dropped their first match of the season. In no. 2 doubles, the team of junior Shad Harrell (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) and sophomore Kevin Calhoun (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin)played their best match this season, doing everything well and winning by a score of 8-1. In the no. 3 slot, juniors Tal Covington (Gainesville, VA/Flint Hill) and Zack Pack (Keysville, VA/Randolph-Henry) jumped out to an early lead but then got tentative. Roanoke took advantage of the opportunity to tie the match at 7-7, but the Tigers put together some good returns to break Roanoke's serve and hold on to win.
At the no. 1 singles spot, ODAC Player of the Week Moss played a smart match against a tough competitor. Both players used good all court games and played well thought-out points, with Moss prevailing 6-2, 6-4. At the no. 2 spot, Pugh was unable to get rolling and never found his rhythm, dropping a tough two-setter. In no. 3 singles, Harrell played great, carrying over from his excellent doubles performance. He had good serves, returns, and ground strokes in an impressive 6-2, 6-0 win. In the no. 4 slot, Calhoun played against a consistent player for Roanoke. It was the day's longest match, and Calhoun was able to come back from being down 9-7 in the 10 point tie breaker to win 11-9 in his 7-5, 4-6, 11-9 victory. At the no. 5 and no. 6 spots, Covington and Pack both played well, with consistent points. They both were able to use their serves to their advantage in their wins that came by scores of 6-0, 6-1 for Covington and 6-4, 6-0 for Pack.
With the win, the Tigers improve to 7-0 overall and 5-0 in the ODAC. Hampden-Sydney will return to action on Friday, March 26th as they host ODAC foe Bridgewater College at 3:30 pm.
