GREENSBORO, NC - Hampden-Sydney Swimming won the ODAC Championship Meet at Greensboro College in decisive fashion. The Tigers are competing against the Randolph-Macon Yellow Jackets and Greensboro College Pride but an official ODAC Title is not on the line as the ODAC does not sponsor men's swimming.
H-SC finished day one, composed of five events for the men, with 270 points. Greensboro checks in at second with 163 while Randolph-Macon is third with just 20 points. Day two saw the Tigers expand on their lead, with 587 points to 390 for Greensboro and 40 for Randolph-Macon. Sunday found H-SC pull away even bigger to go win with 786 points. Greensboro finished with 530 while Randolph-Macon ended up with 60 points.
The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Andy Snow (Deltaville, VA / Christchurch), Lee Ayscue (Lynchburg, VA / Virginia Episcopal), Treavor Hartwell (Palmyra, VA / Fluvanna County), and Ford Scott (Midlothian, VA / Kenston Forest) narrowly finished second behind Greensboro with a time of 1:36.19. Only four participants swam in the 200 yard IM, all Tigers, giving HSC an automatic 68-point boost in the standings. Ke Shang (Hampden-Sydney, VA) took the top spot in 2:14.89. The Tigers also had 13 of the 18 swimmers in the 50 yard freestyle to earn a slew of points, headlined by Alton Brieske in third at 24.24. H-SC closed out the day with a second-place finish in the 400 yard medley relay as John Sheffield (Salem, VA / Salem), Brieske, Shang, and Snow teamed to finish the event in 4:02.96.
The Tigers found great success yet again on Saturday morning. Shang, Brieske, Daniel Moyers (Norfolk, VA / Norfolk Academy), and Hartwell won the 200 yard medley relay in 1:45.33. Shang finished runner-up in the 400 yard IM, finishing the race in 4:55.35. The Tigers took spots 3-6 in the 100 yard butterfly with Scott leading the Tiger contingent at 1:02.47. H-SC also took second and fourth in the 200 yard freestyle with Grayson Kelley (Chesapeake, VA / Hickory) taking runner-up honors with a time of 2:11.23. Brieske won the 100 yard breaststroke with H-SC also earning third and fifth place. Ten swimmers earned points in the 100 yard backstroke, including six Tigers, highlighted by Sheffield's second-place finish of 1:02.20. The last even saw the Tigers go from leading by 165 points to taking a 203-point advantage. The men closed out the day with the 800 yard freestyle relay. H-SC took second in the event behind the efforts of Kelley, Ayscue, John Bishop (Guntersville, AL / Randolph School) and Shang.
Evan Harris (Mechanicsville, VA / Atlee) opened up Sunday's competition with a third place finish in the 1650 yard freestyle with a time of 23:31.48. Kelley was the only participant in the 200 yard backstroke, completing the event in 2:34.03. Ten H-SC swimmers earned points in the 100 yard freestyle with Hartwell leading the way in third at 53:45. Brieske beat out Robert Smith of Greensboro to win the 200 yard breaststroke with a time of 2:26.47. Shang swam the 200 yard butterfly unopposed, finishing the event in 2:25.98. The 400 yard freestyle relay team of Bishop, Ayscue, Sheffield, and Snow took runner-up honors in the 400 yard freestyle relay, hitting the finishing block with a time of 3:42.53.
