HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA – On January 30, members of the Hampden-Sydney swimming team volunteered at the Farmville YMCA for the Adaptive Water Aerobics class.
The class meets every Monday and Saturday and is for individuals with special needs. Members of the community are invited to volunteer their time to help the participants as well as create a fun and safe environment.
"It is amazing to see the smiles on their faces and see them progress in their abilities. For some of them who are confined to a wheelchair or walker all day long, the water allows them to be free of these devices and the ability to move around unassisted," said head cross country and swimming coach Betsy Prengaman.
"Many of them have participated in Special Olympics and I even recognized a few faces from the running of the 'Game Ball' earlier this year. I believe that Sam Smith, Ke Shang and I all enjoyed this heartwarming experience at the YMCA. Hopefully, we can continue to include these special friends in the future!"
