Neither offense was able to gain much traction in the first half as just two shots on goal were recorded. Both came from Guilford in just over a one minute span. At 20:46, Freddy Gomez had his shot saved by Blake Carrey (North Chesterfield, VA/Deep Run). Following a Quaker corner kick at 21:26, Greg Carnovale also had his shot turned back by Carrey.
Guilford posted their first goal at 50:04 when Carnovale deflected a cross from Ronnie Castellanos in to the back of the net. The Tigers were called for a foul in the box at 56:44 and Gomez made sure not to throw away the opportunity as he converted the PK. The Tigers got off a few shots over the remainder of the game, but Michael MacVane played big in net, saving all three shots on goal.
Carrey made three saves for Hampden-Sydney while MacVane made four for Guilford. H-SC outshot GC 11-10 but the Quakers held a slim 5-4 advantage in shots on goal. Guilford recorded 19 fouls to only 10 for Hampden-Sydney.
The Tigers will have to wait until after the Bridgewater vs. Shenandoah game tomorrow at 4 pm to find out their ODAC Tournament fate. The Tigers remain in a three-way tie with Bridgewater and Eastern Mennonite. A win or tie tomorrow for Bridgewater will eliminate the Tigers from the Tournament.
