The Marlins got on board first in the 29th minute when Isaac Arrington finished off a Brian Cornell pass. Alex Strain (Roanoke, VA / North Cross) evened the score at 36:01 after Nick DeProspero (Midlothian, VA / Cosby) dumped the ball off to him off a great run down the middle of the field. Virginia Wesleyan quickly gained back the momentum just 1:23 later when a Josh Kemp direct kick a few yards inside the midfield one hopped just inside the goalpost untouched to make it a 2-1 game at the half.
Arrington put the Marlins up 3-1 with 11:08 left in the contest as he beat his defender one-on-one. The Tigers didn't back down and continued to attack and it payed off eventually at 85:52 when Curran Blackwell (Wilson, NC / Greenfield) headed in a Leo Kowalski (Glen Allen, VA / Deep Run) crosse.
Virginia Wesleyan outshot Hampden-Sydney 19-11 and held advantages in shots on goal (10-6) and corner kicks (6-4). Blake Carrey (North Chesterfield, VA / Deep Run) made seven saves on the afternoon.
Hampden-Sydney travels to Emory, VA, to play the Emory & Henry College Wasps on Satuday at 7:30 pm.
