The Tigers nearly got on the board in the 10th minute when a Bryan Talbert (York, VA/Seaford) freekick a few yards outside the top of the box was narrowly saved. However, Roanoke would score first as Tyler Carbaugh corralled a a heading clear and redirected it into the right sight of the goal, just past the diving hands of Blake Carrey (North Chesterfield, VA/Deep Run). H-SC was not able to get the evenmaker in the half as they were held with just one more shot the rest of the stanza.
H-SC scored early in the half, but the Tigers were called for a foul prior to the shot, thus waiving off the goal. Each team got several goal scoring chances, and some strong saves from both goalkeepers kept each team at bay. Roanoke would get the game-winner at 84:50 when Robbie Lentine sent in a shot from the left side of the box to just inside the right post, courtesy of a Patrick Bain assist. With Hampden-Sydney's back against the wall, the Tigers kept fighting. Two shots went wide and a third shot was saved, but Talbert collected his own rebound and punched it into the left side of the goal to make it 2-1 with 1:13 left in the contest. H-SC was unable to get off another shot to end the game.
Roanoke outshot Hampden-Sydney 14-11 with a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal. Each team recorded four saves, but H-SC was issued 14 fouls compared to just six for the Maroons. Roanoke also hed a 9-3 edge in corner kicks.
Hampden-Sydney hosts Randolph College on Wednesday at 4 pm.
