W&L Emerges Victorious in Hard Fought, Physical Soccer Match
HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA - The visiting Washington & Lee Generals emerged victorious, 1-0, in a hard fought and physical soccer match Saturday afternoon.
The Tigers nearly got on board in the second minute as James Lawrence (Midlothian, VA/Midlothian) got deep in the box for a shot, but a General defender blocked it. Lawrence got the loose ball and fired off another shot, this time blocked as well. Ten minutes later, a Bryan Talbert (Seaford, VA/York) shot initially appeared to be destined for the back of the goal, but a W&L defender on the goal line was able to prevent the score. Hampden-Sydney maintained possession, and Lawrence's shot was turned back by General goalkeeper Kieran McQuilkin. Washington & Lee came within inches of a goal in the 31st minute off a Ben Bayles header, but Nick DeProspero (Midlothian VA/Cosby) saved the day by heading it out at the last second.
Max Quellhorst posted the game-winning score at 68:45. A dangerous pass from Dave Phillips was blocked by Blake Carrey (North Chesterfield, VA/Deep Run), but he was unable to secure the ball and Quellhorst tucked it into the net off the rebound. The Generals defense clamped down on the Tigers the rest of the way as the Tigers only got one more strong look at a goal.
Carrey recorded five saves on the afternoon. W&L held a narrow edge in shots - 14-11 - but held a decisive 7-2 advantage in shots on goal. The Tigers made six saves to two for the Generals. Washington & Lee was awarded nine corner kicks while Hampden-Sydney only took two.
Hampden-Sydney closes out its non-conference schedule on Tuesday when the Tigers travel to Greensboro College on Tuesday for a 4 pm tilt.
