Lockdown Defense Fuels 1-0 Soccer Victory Over Randolph-Macon

James Lawrence

ASHLAND, VA - The Hampden-Sydney Soccer team got back in the win column with a 1-0 win on the road at Randolph-Macon Wednesday afternoon.

Hampden-Sydney got the game-winning tally early as Chris Whiteside (Virginia Beach, VA / Frank W. Cox) found James Lawrence (Midlothian, VA /Midlothian) for the goal in the 23rd minute. The Tigers had numerous chances to score throughout the contest, but R-MC goalkeeper Chris Lowe was strong in net, recording nine saves on the evening.

The Tigers defense was outstanding throughout the contest. The Yellow Jackets were limited to just three shots over the 90-minute contest along with only two corner kicks as R-MC was never able to get their offense on track.

Hampden-Sydney outshot Randolph-Macon 14-3 on the afternoon, had a 10-1 advantage in shots on goal, and had a 6-2 margin in corner kicks. The referees were whistle happy today, issuing 18 fouls on the Tigers and 13 on the Yellow Jackets.

Hampden-Sydney hosts Washington & Lee on Saturday at 3 pm for Family Weekend.
