FREDERICKSBURG, VA - Hampden-Sydney Soccer opened their season with a 1-0 loss to Mary Washington on Saturday afternoon.
Mary Washington controlled much of the game. UMW lead 12-3 in shots in the first half but was held scoreless behind five saves from goalkeeper Blake Carrey (North Chesterfield, VA / Deep Run). The Eagles Josh Campbell committed a critical error in the first half when he was issued a red card 33:28 into the game, leaving the Tigers with a one-man advantage the remainder of the contest. The red card didn't appear to hinder the Mary Washington offense much as they still managed to outshoot the Tigers 11-7 over the remainder of the contest.
UMW's Patrick Kelley posted the lone goal of the game at the 48:03 mark. H-SC got off six more shots in the half, but only Leo Kowalski (Glen Allen, VA / Deep Run / Virginia Commonwealth) was able to target one on goal. Carrey finished the game with six saves in his first collegiate start while Curran Blackwell (Wilson, NC / Greenfield) registered two shots. H-SC was outshot 20-9 while the corner kicks were even at 5-5.
Hampden-Sydney plays Marymount on Sunday at 3:30 pm from Mary Washington University.
